I'm sure it's just the next excuse in a long line of many pre-2030. I don't recall any shortage of rainfall in the UK this winter and beyond - in fact, I'd say we've been getting quite a decent amount, more than making up for the hot, dry spell in August 2022.

How does that affect car manufacturing? very few are made here.

But it does sound like another excuse by the manufacturers to keep on raising prices.

In truth surely most plants recycle water used in production to keep their costs down. It might fall out of the sky but it still needs treatment before use and piping to the site.

Any bets on what the next one will be?

Complete and utter garbage designed to create concern where none exists. Some basic figures:

  • approx 10m cars are made in Europe each year.
  • there are ~750m people in Europe

Water use in car production is an average ~50 litres per person.

About equivalent to an extra mug of tea every other day. Even a gently dripping tap can waste 4 litres a day - 25 times the use in car production.

I think the headline is referring to car plants in Southern Europe and in particular. Spain where VW have their Seat plant.

Spain has been particularly badly hit by soaring temperatures and low rainfall which is affecting other things like agriculture .

Maybe they should've built their plant 'on the plain' then? :-)

Seriously though - I thought that many historically drier countries were putting a lot of investment into desal plants so this 'problem' is avoided

Besides, all the supposed 'shortages' of fruit and veg we suffered from in recent times were actually because our supermarkets had screwed down the suppliers on price more than their continetal counterparts, so a small shortfall was mainly borne by UK retailers because the continental ones were prepared to pay the higher prices.

I understood Dubai was the only place building desal plants as they had so much cash to spend

Yet microchips are still a long way from getting back to normal, approx mid next year to 2025 and beyond, as fabrication plants take a while to build depending on die size

Australia is building them. There are two in West Australia and more planned.

So what has happened to all the existing microchip production plants? A good deal are in Taiwan, so they should be up and running at full capacity again, as should most ones in Western nations and most others.

Is it really that China is still got their draconian lockdowns going and that a good amount of the chips are from there? I'd bet it is as regards general computer and tech (TVs, phones) products. If China is doing this to themselves, no wonder they 'want' to subjugate Taiwan in short order by threats of or an actual invasion.

Hopefully a good deal of firms are now trying to diverisfy away from China to avoid such ongoing problems, but as you say, replacement manufacturing (and R&D) facilities take a few years at least to get from conception to being fully operational and with all the related logistical conditions all in place to fully replace (and more) shuttered facilities elsewhere.

Having extensions built but don`t forget the interiors are cleaner than any other clean factories, the fabrication units take months to get right so they do not waste too many wafers, one chip on a wafer thats bad wrecks a wafer so can only be used for lower grade electronics

not all chips work for all electronics, though the more powerful chips are prioritised for motherboards and TV electronics, they sell more than cars, but they don`t need as much power though they are catching up slowly
