Of course that's why I put it on here. I think its a good one and I admit it had me spitting my breakfast before I twigged. I use the M4 with its crazy 50 a lot. 50 is fine in the rush hour but 24 hours ridiculous but the Welsh Gov. oops politics will not build an alternative to avoid the tunnels which are the real problem. Road is out of date and pollution is the reason given for the speed limit. What I fail to understand and this is true for the rest of the UK is why houses are still being built right next to our major roads. Pollution problem solved with EVs? but this will take 20 years and won't solve traffic volumes on the M$

If you are referring to the Newport tunnels, maybe the residents of that town would have something to say about any serious 'improvement' of the M4 there.

The M4 is a joke through South Wales. There are regular queues back to the Second Severn Bridge now called The Prince of Wales Bridge to theses tunnels, 3lanes into 2 won't go! and the same going out of Wales to the tunnels a regular 10miles or so both ways.. A new route was mapped out and presented to the public . Property was bought out along the route and the whole thing cost millions but was shelved by WG largely due to pollution or so they say.. The M4 Wales is a disaster for business and with a new tourist tax for Wales won wonders what will happen to the economy. The pollution must increase with regular queuing so the only solution for most is the route that was mapped out.by passing the tunnels and most of the population affected.

I wonder if they got the idea from www.glasgowlive.co.uk/news/glasgow-news/glasgow-m8...2 ?

I wonder what causes the most pollution queuing travelling at 30 or 50 or 70 . The M42 through south Birmingham with variable limits according to traffic volume is a good solution?

The problem with the Newport section of M4 is the same problem as found in so many other places, the standard of driving is generally appalling, lane hogging, inability to maintain progress, lane discipline.
As for overcrowding of the roads in general, hardly suprising, the country's road network was never imagined to have to cope with the overcrowding of the island, get used to it, going to get much worse.

Always strange how people say the UK is an awful place yet people keen to come here.

One problem with the Newport section is that it is a hilly area - the reason for the tunnels, which are followed by a long climb up another hill, which wagons don't enjoy, and which causes extra pollution. Plus the fact that much of the hillside is inhabited, making any bypass long and/or expensive.

Like millions of others, I frequently drive up and down the M1 between the Midlands and the M25. I wonder if anyone has ever recently accomplished this, day or night, without being slowed by a sub 70mph limit along the way? There always seems to be daytime congestion, or night-tme road repairs. Transient stoppages due to RTCs are ever more frequent. Long gone are the pre-camera days of relaxed cruising at well above 70 at quiet clear times; a pleasure only available in Germany nowadays, I think.

How is everyone going on ev going to work with charging points in Housing estates where a single block will hold 180 flats, and there are 8 blocks or so in them ?

By filling up somewhere else.
Just like they do now.
Or, looking another way, where do they park their cars? Could they be charged there?
