I bought a car that turned out to have been previously written off but repaired. The seller told me that they didn’t know about this and after checking it was 2 years before they bought it so tend to believe them but What can I do? Can I return the car for a refund?

If the seller is a trader, I wouldn't believe for a minute they didn't know. But depending on how recently you bought it, you still should be entitled to a refund.

So get your money back and learn these two lessons: 1, Always check the history of the car yourself. 2, Assume all salesmen are liars.

No it was a private sale not a trader

If it was a private sale then you have no realistic comeback. If it was from a dealer or trader you may have some recourse.
How did you find out about the repair?

I happened to look on the logbook and it was on there, I hadn’t noticed it previously. Saw it when I was sorting out my paperwork, when it came in the post I just filed it away. I filled in my details on the log book when I bought the car and didn’t notice it either.

I think it’s unlikely that the seller didn’t know but then again maybe they missed it as you did. However, while it’s not ideal, you may not have lost a great deal. It doesn’t take much for an insurer to write off a car, especially if it’s a few years old and, as long as it’s been properly repaired, there may not be much wrong with it.

You might want to put it down to experience and not dig further. However if you do want a view as to any loss you might have suffered then if you give more details (category of insurance write-off, mileage and price paid) there might be people on here who will give an opinion as to how good or bad a buy it was.

What would you think my chances of trying to go through the courts to get my money back are?

Nil.

Very slim indeed.

You said earlier that you believed the seller when they told you that they didn't know. I'm a bit more sceptical on that, but you'd have to prove the seller knew the car had been written off when they sold it to you.
