I found my Mondeo 56plate (edge tdci 2.0), the most joyful car to drive. Unfortunately, I had to scrap it due to expensive turbo repair quote. And I bought the cheapest car that my mechanic had - focus 1.8 petrol. And the joy was gone..I need powerful (cheap, not on finance) car, that will have a quick reaction, fast pull, strong uphill, spacious boot. I was looking for above 2008 Mondeo td, but, reading about dpf, and only averaging 15-20 miles per day (city, bypass mostly), it's probably not a good idea. But there must be something better than my current focus..Here I am looking for make and model suggestion (year 2007 and Up), under £4000 (preferably way under ??). Fuel sort not important. I miss mondeo power.

You need something with a turbocharger. There are quite a lot of older Vauxhall Vectras and Astras that will do what you want. Maybe even look at Saabs.

Just going by the title, perhaps you can find a small circus that is closing and selling off its clown car fleet.

That's what I did. Never looked back (rear-view mirrors fallen off)

Whenever anything else falls off I think "Oh the JOY that gave the children in former years"

Putting the bare details into Auto Trader (performance, boot space, budget, age) brings up a range of cars, mainly Jags, Chrysler 300, Audi A6, BMW 5 and the like. All strike me as potentially very expensive in the event of repairs. There are a couple of Insignias that might be a potential bet as I agree old Vauxhalls are worth a punt.

I set the boot size at 500 litre plus. Lowering that a bit would bring Astras and other smaller cars into scope. If 3 door is acceptable then 2008-2012 Civic Type R would be a left field choice.

Joy though is a subjective and elusive quality. The most joyful car I ever had was a 1966 Renault 4 with around 45hp. There are a lot of lower powered cars that are good to drive and maybe more reliable. Suzuki Swift, Ford Focus (ironically as that’s the current car) but at the target budget and age all will have their risks.

If pushed I would agree the Saab suggestion. I had a 9-5 in 1999 but the 9-3 with a hatch is more practical. I know they are Vauxhalls underneath but they were good to drive and appeal to a demographic that might well have looked after them well. Good ones at this budget will be rare however.

Mondeo ST-220?

My trawl missed this one as I set the age at 2008 or newer. I had the lower powered version as a company car (c170bhp). It was a fine car but not as fast or well equipped as this one which looks great in the exterior shots. However there is a four year gap in MoTs (longer than the COVID hiatus) and the interior seems a bit tired with all four seats looking more worn than I would expect from the declared miles. But no car of this age and budget will be perfect and if it’s within distance and appeals to the OP it’s worth a look.

As a model the 220 is worth considering even if this particular one proves not to be up to the mark.

Audi A4 Tdi Avant May fit tge bull.

Good looking , great acceleration and miserly fuel consumption.

So good one of our past moderators named himself after Avant on this site !

The Focus 1.8 is not a great deal less powerful than the Mondeo TDCi but what it lacks is a turbocharger thus only has about 1/2 the torque.

Whatever non turbo car you buy will feel sluggish compared to the TDCi Mondeo, even a ST 220 unless you rev it.

For your budget its going to be difficult.

If you can find one, the previous generation Volvo S60 with either the 2.5T or T5 engine could be worth a look. The engines pack a big punch and while the handling is nowhere near as sharp as a Mondeo, it's tidy. The interiors are also very nicely done, and the seats are superbly comfy.

You could also consider a D5 diesel variant, even those with a DPF don't seem to suffer too many problems compared to other marques.

Mondeo st 220 is a flying machine. I had the estate version. But be careful, the one advertised is the later model and the ved is £615 .

As long as it gets up to temp I wouldn't have thought 15-20 miles a day would cause issue for most DPF cars. The Mondeo 2.0 TDCi would do it fine I would think.

I wonder if you are confusing 'joy' with 'satisfaction'? Probably the most joyful cars I have driven (in my youth admittedly) were underpowered basic models, e.g Citroen 2CV, Mini (original, not the modern impractical fashionable obesity on wheels), Fiat 500.

Is there something wrong with your Focus? It should have a top speed of over 120mph and a sub 10sec 0-60 time. The suspension is well engineered and it has been praised for its agility.

Satisfaction is the word, Yess! The truth is, that my focus got an eml light on, but last time I went to the mechanic, he switched it off and it was back on the next day. I guess, I miss the turbo feeling. I bought my Mondeo for like £700 about 2 years ago, so I thought I'd fit to 2x a price for similar sort of car ??. Must have 5doors, I like Insignia look, but I'm tempted to give Mondeo one more try, I could regenerate it every day up to a massive hill. Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll research in the evening, what's available locally and may test drive some.

Try cleaning the throttle body - allegedly they can sometimes get a bit clogged which restricts the air flow at idle making the engine run rich and somehow affectng the EMS (no idea). Anyway, it worked for our old Focus.

Thanks, I think that exacly will be a problem, although I don't know what is the throttle. Any ideas how much that would cost at mechanics'? I'd like to make it fit for sale.

A £700 car from two years ago is probably a £2000 car today.

In your experience, what's better - 2005 Mondeo with 70k mi or 2012 with 200k on the clock? And is there any difference in performance between ghia/LX/edge etc? Thanks

I think you ask an unanswerable question, because it depends on the particular cars, and nobody is likely to have experience of both the ones you are considering

I suppose received opinion would be younger is statistically better, but that’s arguable, and kind of academic anyway

And is there any difference in performance between ghia/LX/edge etc

For any specific engine the performance will be identical regardless of trim.

But for the money and age you are looking at getting a knackered car will be much easier than getting a good one.

I live in sticks, narrow country roads, potholes, I don't need a new car. Just one that would last a year or 2 without repair expense haha. I'm here to gain confidence before buying from someone else but my mechanic. I thought that there's plenty old, but well maintained cars, people just getting rid of because ulez or other personal reasons. Life is too short to drive a car that doesn't have a satisfying performance. And I'd prefer older version where you actually have to put the key into ignition, not start stop crap :D

Looking for older joyful car - Warning

How much would the turbo cost to repair? It is better having a car you know repaired then taking on someone else's car.
