Hi folks.
The coolant in our 2001 Citroen Picasso petrol 1.8sx requires topping up (only small amount after 30k, so no dramas), but am not sure which sort to use, the stuff in the header tank is clear (has usual antifreeze type smell) and my usual car parts place is unsure what I can top it off with (they said it may be organic type??). Would any of the green, blue or pink variety be okay to use?
The car survived a cold winter in living Italian alps without freezing so pretty certain it's not just water. It's the original stuff from when it was new (uk car).
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks.

The new citroen stuff is like a straw colour.

Your best bet is to get some from citroen. May cost you a couple of quid more (if that), but then you can be sure it's the correct stuff and is compatible with your existing antifreeze.

As Dave has said top up with stuff from Citroen, never mix the different colour antifreezes - they may all be ethylene glycol based but the chemical make-up of the corrosion inhibitors is totally different. If you mix them, even though the engine may not freeze it will corrode as the effectiveness of the corrosion inhibitors is greatly reduced by mixing different types.

Mixing different types of AF will often cause the mixture to turn to jelly......not good.

If it only requires a small top up, then I would just use water.

If this is the original, at approx 30 months old I would be considering replacing after flushing the cooling system. Has this been done in line with service schedule?

citroen have used organic acid technology coolant since about 86

Is this meant to compensate for appaling build quality of some of their radiators? Hence symptoms such as Xm 2.5TDs eating them or other cooling circuit parts every 25K??
Apparently all warranty claims are void unless the "Antigel" mixture recommended by Citroen has been used...

I'm going to assume topping up with blue coolant wasn't the best idea then?

Damn.

So, anyone fancy telling me how to change the coolant on an HDi? I have no idea about bleeding etc.

What does "organic acid technology" mean?

Remove header tank cap, remove bottom hose(or undo radiator drain plug if there is one),let coolant drain.Flush with hose, thermostat removal will make this more effective but you don't have to.Locate bleed valve(s),look on top of hoses at highest point.Undo, fill system with coolant, having replaced bottom hose on rad of course, when it starts to flow from bleed valves close them.
