Mileage rates - Mark (RLBS)
Does anybody know what the Inland Revenue approved mileage rate is from somebody claiming fuel while using a company car upto 2000cc on business ?

I know using your own car is 40p up to 10,000 miles and 25p thereafter, but I can't find a reference to a rate for using company cars I'd expect it to be around 14/15p.

And yes, I have tried the IR site and their telephones.

I think in theory, a company can pay anthing up to the IR limits without the employee incurring any tax liability - however can't think that any employer would be so generous!

My company pays 12p per mile for petrol up to 2000cc and 9p per mile on diesel. This hasn't changed for a couple of years.

Strangely enough when working for another company 5 years ago I used to be able to claim 10p per mile on my Xantia TD. So it does seem to be somewhat down to individual discretion.

Hi Mark, the inland revenue rates apply to mileage covered in your own vehicle when solely on company business .If using a company vehicle and having to purchase fuel i am required only get a vat receipt and claim the money back. In our company no mileage allowance exists for using a company owned vehicle. When i use my own car I claim at the revenue rates. Recently our company has enhanced the rate at it's own expense to compensate for higher fuel prices. Concrete.

I presume this vehicle is not used by yourself for personal mileage though. Otherwise you are liable for tax on any private mileage covered on company-purchased fuel, unless the fuel paid for by the company exactly matches that used on company business. This is of course nearly impossible to achieve.

My last employer issued AllStar fuel cards on which all fuel purchases were made (and paid for by the company), but private mileage had to be noted every month, and was deducted at a fixed rate per mile from my salary.

Another previous employer made us pay for our own fuel in company cars, but reimbursed business mileage at 10p per mile. As I was doing 20,000 business miles a year, this was a complete pain (had to find over £200 a month in fuel and then claim the mileage back).

Either way there is no tax liability, as private mileage is paid for in one way or another by the employee.
