you can have my super lada, it should be in max power magazine soon, it has about £8000 of I.C.E (in car entertainment), £2000 worth of alloys, £350 worth of new tyres, new turbo which cost £1700, and about £4000 of other bits, and you can have the car for only £10000.
Stereo - John Slaughter
For £8k I expect the stereo has a greater power output than the engine

Cheers

If you want a 1998 328i Touring with "M" suspention and wheels, Air and Leather with a BMW main dealer service record from new and nothing wrong with it except 80,000 miles mostly on motorways, you should be able to get one for £12,000. This will leave you with £3000 to pay for an engine rebuild IF you need it because of the bore wear problem on these engines. I asked BMW and they say that all cars manufactured after March 98 don't have the problem. This car is January 98. 0 to 60 in 5 seconds and looks sensible.
Brilliant drive for £12,000 or even £15,000. Well under your limit.

Golf/Bora/astra/307. What a load of rubbish.

It depends what you want/need I suppose:

If you want a coupe you could get a Celica 140 (after discount)

If you want a family car you could get a Mondeo/Rover 75/Passat

If you want a hot hatch you could get Seat Leon Cupra or a Honda Civic Type R (including the optional aircon)

Or you could buy all manner of used cars.

16K is a fair amount of cash so you should be able to get something good whether you buy new or used.
Re: £16K WHAT VALUE IS THERE OUT THERE ? - David Woollard
I agree with Martin, £16K is a lot and the choice you have now would be amazing to someone in the same (relative) circumstances 20yrs ago.

There is no doubt that a brand new car ought to ward off repair bills for the greatest period, but boy will you pay for it in depreciation.

In five years this £16K car might be worth £3/4K to trade in. And then you might have to look at a £20K car to replace it. I have several customers with 3/4/5 year old cars who are gutted when they find out the cost of returning to the dealers to trade back up to their start point again. Fine if the funds are easy to come by.

Importing or buying nearly new will help beat the odds. Alternatively there are plenty of very capable £6000 used cars out there, with a bit of luck they could still give economical motoring. Even if scrapped at the end they work out cheaper than the new option. And it leaves £10K to get a nice hi-fi for the home.

Much depends on the need for image or reliability really.

Just been driving the new 200bhp six-speed Honda Civic Type-R on closed unrestricted roads on the Isle of Man. It's £15,995, does 0-60 in 6.6 and tops out at 146. Most of us had it past 120 over the mountain. Alternatively, a SEAT Leon 20VT six-speed. Performance not far short, argualbly better handling plus standard aircon and an electro galvanized body for £14,995. Will upload road test of Civic Type-R to the site within the next few days.

Dick Lovett Mercedes in Swindon has a Signature 99V C200 Elegance Automatic Aircon in tormaline green with grey cloth and just 15k on the clock for just £15990. Looks cheap as most dealers are asking more for R reg cars with more than 35k on the clock. Must be worth a telephone call.
