VW Passat B6 2.0 Tdi 170 bhp - Turbo - Tred

Slight whine from turbo low down on acceleration around 2000-2500 RPM. Do I need to replace it, mileage from new 73456

Check turbo pipes, clamps & downpipes for leaks first. At 73456 it's barely run in.

Holset turbos for Cummins engines were expected to last as long as the engine warranty, 250,000 miles.

Turbos for modern petrol engines will probably be less durable, most need water-cooled bearing housings, good quality oil and regular changes, which are not guaranteed in many cases.

I had a previous gen Passat that had a flexible tube as part of the main down pipe that started failing - first symptom was turbo noise, strangely not audible exhaust blow. New downpipe fixed it. On another VAG car my Skoda Superb mkI 1.9 pd a clip failed (well rusted away) on a turbo pipe feeding the intercooler which also caused issues - also easily fixed. Always worth a check as that's free.

Actually relating the afore mentioned clips on VAG cars that hold intercooler plastic pipes & similar that secure radiator plastic pipes - they are a real potential failure. I changed a radiator on a previous Octavia mkI and I'm amazed the pipes hadn't released before - a clip collapsed into a pile of bits/ rust dust as I tried to release them. When I replaced them I coated with Owatrol oil for future protection. They outlived the rest of the car.

Only "turbo" issue we have had was on a Golf TDi. A vacuum pipe was poorly routed and on very hot days it kinked and the turbo stopped blowing. Bit of a b***** when you had a 1ton + trailer on the back.

Obviously a common issue, dealer diagnosed it in seconds.
