I wonder why, in this age of comfortable durable fabrics, the expensive preparation and treatment of cattleskin is widely used for car seats and surroundings. Very few would choose it for chairs in the home - why in cars? I much preferred the fabric of my old cars to the leather of my current one - on which I use a thin cushion.

If it was a cheap way of using a waste product from an edible animal it might make sense....but it isn't cheap. Perhaps I am biased; I remember the petrol fume and tobacco smoke laden stench of old leather invoking a Pavlovian retch response - an associated memory of childhood carsickness.

I've had leather seats in a few previous cars but I'll try to avoid it in the future, the hot in summer & cold in winter gets annoying when you get in to your car, then having to treat the seats to avoid future cracking also gets tiresome.

I currently have Alcantara & I'm finding it a much better material for a vehicle seat.

Different in other parts of the world, in Japan the (probably the best quality car in the world) Toyota Century will usually have pure wool upholstery for its superior comfort warmth and quiet.

Two of our cars have leather, being only choice for the spec when they were new, both driver's seats have sheepskin covers because neither of us like the instant cold shock nor the heat retention in summer of leather...you should try getting sitting on 11 freezing cold seats one after another in a car compound...the shrivelling effect is something else :-)

Leather can look attractive but should be in warm attractive or traditional colours, that bright white leather seen in Teslas looks hideous (as does the ludicrous wide screen monitor stuck in the middle of the dash) but not as bad as some of the middle east bound Range Rovers i was unfortunate enough to witness in my previous work, made one feel quite queasy.

Talking of monitors on dashboards, just why? and will it get to the same ludicrous stage as image conscious makers and the ever larger ever uglier grills they fit to ruin the front of their offerings, wouldn't give you a thankyou for any of this trash or is trashy the new chic.

Messy kids and elderly incontinent adults.

Leather easily wiped - very difficult to stain permanently and even when getting older/ cracked can be revived easily and look "brand new" in minutes.

Leather is a by-product and is recycling in action.

Mercedes have their own variety of faux leather called MB tex . Been using it for years.

Personally, yes, I prefer it because of messy kids. The 'vegan leather' seats are much too sweaty for me. I really like the look of the fabrics in things like the Honda e, Mazda MX30 and some Citroens; it's more of a wool look. I don't fancy trying to extract squashed fruit from it though

Hardly unusual for sofas/armchairs to be leather - pretty common

The UK tanning industry has reduced over recent years down to a few high quality traditional manufacturers. They are governed by strict environmental standards. However most of the world's leather is now produced using damaging chrome-based chemicals in countries where the environmental standards are much lower than in the West. It's a very polluting business.

That aside I have had two leather clad cars and I wouldn't have it again due to the lack of comfort.

Some do look spectacular though. I used to see an Alfa parked locally with fantastic traditional leather. In a rich red colour with piped edging it was a beautiful interior. It looked cool......but would have still been uncomfortable.

Perforated leather car seats are the ones to go for, our Accord has them and they are supremely comfortable in summer and winter.

It probably would have been cool in winter, but rather hot in summer. Not really the best material for convertibles (tho I did own one for about 18 months). Leather seats in a car regularly with the roof down don't last too well.

I like leather upholstery in cars, its appearance and feel. In domestic furniture it's often too slippery.

When I bought the first Caterham back in 1988 they still produced the basic car with the same bench seat fitted in 1957 upholstered in lovely PVC. There were 2 options, cloth bucket seats and leather bucket seats. Not a hugely expensive option so which one? I knew from previous experience with a Triumph Spitfire cloth in an open top car is a stupid idea so leather it was. No regrets, made selling the car much easier since it was an option virtually all buyers looked for, in fact the car was bought and exported to Japan by a trader and he only bought cars with leather seats.

Bought the current Caterham in 1992, 30 years ago. Went for leather again and 30 years later they still looks great, a nice patina has developed with wear, all I do is wipe them occasionally with a damp microfibre cloth.

The current Superb is the first "normal" car we have had with leather. No choice in the matter, it is what that model had even on the base spec. After 2 years we are more than happy with them, even during the recent heatwave we had no issues and the leather in our car is dark grey - basically not quite black.

Despite being more than happy would I pay a substantial sum for leather in our next car should they not be standard, probably not.

But one thing that truly p***es me off are those manufacturers that sell cars with "leather" than is actually plastic. Mercedes has already been mentioned but others are available. Buyers see the word "leather" and ignore the word before or after that confirms they are fake, Mercedes used the word "artico" before leather 2 years ago when we looked. Probably enough to prevent them getting into trouble.

Most automotive leather is coated to prevent liquid spills damaging the leather. In that they are little different to the days of vinyl when burnt thighs or cold rear was a function of season.

Perforating the leather helps, and for convertibles their is a clear benefit of leather/vinyl over fabric.

Otherwise it largely beats me why anyone would pay a premium for leather - probably a legacy of the gentlemans club school of decor a la chesterfield.

All the seats (lounge, snug, dining, office) in my house are leather. Durable. Easy to clean.

Don't see the problem.

We are quite often covered in mud at the weekends. Leather seats wipe clean. Works for us.
