Has anyone converted their low beam headlights to LED.

If so, which wires to the headlamp multipin plug did you fit the load resistor to remove the 'headlamp bulb failure' warning.

thanks

What bulbs are fitted currently as original equipment?
2017 Hyundai Tucson - Low Beam conversion - autumnboy

They are H7's at mo

Shouldn’t need any ballast resistance on these . Just be careful which ones you buy , there’s a lot of cheap rubbish out there .

Are you talking about fitting a proper manufacturer approved headlight or just fitting an led bulb. If the latter you may well fail the MOT as it's not original equipment and the beam pattern is likely to be well off as the LEDs are spread out much more than the filament of the bulb.

I believe because of having a 'Projector lens' in the headlamp for the low beam.

Then the beam is not affected for MOT failure.

Yes I want to fit Osram LEDs in place of OEM H7

But even on the Osram description of LED replacements : - "These products are not ECE-approved and must not be used on public roads in any exterior application."

I know as I've investigated this myself. The other issue with my car (mkII Superb - dip beam H7 projector lens) is not triggering a bulb fault .

Have a look at Philips instead of Osram, their led bulbs are now road legal in france and germany.

Good quality brighter and still legal bulbs from either Osram or Philips provide a big improvement, no worries about tripping any bulb warnings and no worries about the MOT test.

I've read some people have experienced short lives from these brighter bulbs, hasn't been my experience ours have lasted many years so i'm inclined to think ham fisted fitting with sweaty fingers on the glass has some bearing.

I wonder if these LED bulbs are acceptable in a RHD car?

Led bulbs are the same , left or right drive . It’s the reflector/ Lens set up that makes the difference.

So would they be acceptable in a RHD car with the reflector/lens set up for RHD?

Many older RHD cars having H4 bulbs, had a front lens with a section designed to throw a part of the dip beam up and left.

I understood the H4 dip beam bulb mirror (at least) was canted over, depending on the market.

Older cars would certainly have had that system . H4 and H7 are still widely used , but not as popular, but the beam pattern is done with bulb alignment and reflector mirror. That’s why a lot of the cheapo led bulbs are not very effective as they produce just a “mush” of light with no definition of pattern.

Found some small print:

LED lamp must be replaced by a halogen
lamp for driving on the left.

Not necessarily applicable to these Philip's bulbs. I helped our french next door neighbour fit some Philips leds to his car. They have a degree scale etched on the front of the adaptor ring left 45 - 0 - 45 right etc and a very small locking hexagon socket grub screw locks the adaptor ring to the body of the bulb, they come in the box set at zero with a 1.5 mm hexagon (allen) key supplied. The adaptor ring is the part that fits in the H1 recess in the headlamp. We fitted them set to the zero mark and they seem to be fine on my beam setter. ( the inside of the barn doors painted white with a centre line marked on the floor).

Maybe Philips are setting this up for the future so that to fit X bulb to Y car set scale to Z degs left or right?

I’ve just swapped main & dipped beam halogen H7’s to Phillips Ultinon 9000’s in my 2012 Megane.
A perfect cut off on dip and a much more effective main beam. No warning lights so far.
I’ve had to grind away a bit of the main beam housing to fit them as they’ve a cooling fan on them, plus having to squeeze some extra wiring in.
As above, as long as the MOT tester can’t see the bulbs because they’re projector lights, and they pass the alignment test, they can’t fail them.

They may notice the bright, white light intensity.

But they’re not allowed to remove any covers/caps to check.
I did check with an MOT tester recently, who has LED’s in his own, originally halogen, car.

There is an older Lexus that has clearly fitted awful bulbs that crosses my path most days - I'm sure closing my eyes whilst driving is not recommended but it seems the better option to avoid the retina blast. Not projector headlights though. There are some terrible bulbs on the market.
