Audi A3 - Spontaneous combustion - Stackman II

Yesterday morning I went to take my ageing mother shopping in the local town. As I left the supermarket I had a call from my wife. "Come home now, my car is on fire!"

My wife's car is a 16 year old Audi A3 with the 1.9 TDi engine and has been fairly painless to own despite her driving mostly short journeys around rural lanes.

She couldn't give me any more information as she was obviously pre-occupied with the potential conflagration.

On my return I saw the car was on the drive with the bonnet up and generally looking a bit sad. It transpired that she had been in the house when she heard a car alarm go off. (The car had been sat on the drive for 2 days)

She looked out and saw the hazard lights flashing and smoke pouring out from under the bonnet. Fortuantely our neighbour came round and decided the best course of action would be to disconnect the battery. They managed to open the door and pull the bonnet release. The car was full of smoke with the source of the fire being under the dash on the passenger side. They got the battery out and the fire died.

We presume that the earlier heavy thunderstorms caused water ingress to the fuse box causing short circuits and fire. The passenger side of the dash is melted and the interior trashed.

Given the age and mileage of the car, 135,000, is it worth claiming on the insurance ?

I presume they will only value the car at a few hundred pounds with subsequent increases in premium to follow.

The pre-incident value must be more than few hundred if the car was previously in good condition. These 1.9 engines are highly regarded and the mileage is good for the car's age. A quick look on Autotrader at private sales should give an indication.

Possibly water ingress into the heater motor system. Whatever caused it , the car is totalled , and scrap . I think you need to inform the insurance whatever you decide to do .

Wondering if the issue is similar to that found in some Vauxhall Zafiras some years ago? Admitedly the latter sounded more like a design flaw than something related to the age of the car / failed parts.

Possibly water ingress into the heater motor system. .

Might a malfunction in the car's alarm system be the cause, or why were the hazards flashing - unless someone had set them off ?

I spent some time yesterday looking at comparable cars online and was surprised to see that the cheapest one on sale was around £1,500 and many were over £2,000.

We therefore decided to make a claim on the insurance and will wait and see what the offer is.

Mate had an immaculate BX petrol few years ago. He was indoor bowling when someone rushed in telling him it was in flames. Total write off.

A person I know, 70+, of was sitting in the house.

His car went on fire in the garage, this then set the house next door on fire.

Fire brigade arrived and the car and his garage were well alight - both write-offs. The worst damage was to the house next door as the wind had driven the flames in that direction.

The car was written off, 3 months later the garage and the house next door were fixed.

Unfortunately the owner of the car had a heart attack that night but 2/3 months later was on the mend. No new car as he cannot drive until he gets his licence back.

So, at long last a final update on the incinerated A3.

Before Christmas I phoned the insurance company to chase progress on the claim.

The car had been removed shortly after we claimed and taken to a breakers yard where it was to be examined by the insurance company's engineers. We were told that they had made a preliminary report but could not rule out the fire having been deliberately set through an accelerant being poured on the dashboard and that further forensic investigation would be required.

I called back after Christmas and was told that our claim was being dealt with by "another department" and gave me a telephone number.

I called this number several times and after being given explicit warnings about giving false or misleading information and other proclamations relating to fraudulent activity I presumed I was being asked to deal with their fraud department. Unfortunately I never got to speak to anyone as everytime I got through I was put in a queue and nobody picked up for at least 30 minutes. Each time I called I had to hang up as other people needed my attention.

As you can imagine this was quite stressful as we were concerned the insurance company suspected us of making a fraudulent claim.

I was resolved to take some time off work so I could sit undisturbed in the queue to try to get to the bottom when I received an e-mail from the insurers. They said that they had valued the car at £1,500 and would be arranging payment in the next few days.

We are still awaitng the payment confirmation but it is a great relief that this incident is finally coming to an end.

What an insult and all over £1500. I would not insure with them again. Have they cancelled your policy?

Audi A3 - Spontaneous combustion - Stackman II

We had already replaced the car and they transferred the policy to the new car.

We bought the car around 6 years ago, our son-in-law worked for a Fiat dealer at the time and they had taken the Audi in part exchange.

We had 6 years and 40,000 miles for £300.

I sold a ford focus with over 150'00 mils on the clock for £900, 2nd hand cars are in demand because they are mechanical and not computerized, as suggested I would go online see how much a like for like 2nd hand cars are selling for and try get that off your insuranc ecompany.

I think you would be surprised, in a good way.

Sorry, did not read the final bit.

I am so glad you got a result, insurance companies are always playing silly b*****s with honest people.

I also want to thank you, I input regularly onto this page and it is nice that you took the time to let us know how it ended. I wish you well sir.
