Yesterday morning I went to take my ageing mother shopping in the local town. As I left the supermarket I had a call from my wife. "Come home now, my car is on fire!"
My wife's car is a 16 year old Audi A3 with the 1.9 TDi engine and has been fairly painless to own despite her driving mostly short journeys around rural lanes.
She couldn't give me any more information as she was obviously pre-occupied with the potential conflagration.
On my return I saw the car was on the drive with the bonnet up and generally looking a bit sad. It transpired that she had been in the house when she heard a car alarm go off. (The car had been sat on the drive for 2 days)
She looked out and saw the hazard lights flashing and smoke pouring out from under the bonnet. Fortuantely our neighbour came round and decided the best course of action would be to disconnect the battery. They managed to open the door and pull the bonnet release. The car was full of smoke with the source of the fire being under the dash on the passenger side. They got the battery out and the fire died.
We presume that the earlier heavy thunderstorms caused water ingress to the fuse box causing short circuits and fire. The passenger side of the dash is melted and the interior trashed.
Given the age and mileage of the car, 135,000, is it worth claiming on the insurance ?
I presume they will only value the car at a few hundred pounds with subsequent increases in premium to follow.
