Today's other test drive. This was the standard 4xe, not the more powerful Trailhawk.
The setup in this is different again. This is a 4wd with the electric motor driving the back wheels and the petrol driving the front. If the charge drops too low, the petrol engine works as a generator to keep the electric engine going and maintain 4wd at all times.
This arrangement probably works nicely off-road, and there are various modes and hill descent available. On the road, it's a lot like the Leon and Golf GTE. It works nicely until you try to accelerate hard, at which point it drops down to a low gear and revs very hard. If you are not the sort to accelerate hard, all good. If you push quite hard, it gets annoying. There is no 'B' mode, so the regenerative braking is limited.
Other than that, it's like any other Renegade. Quite a spacious interior and quite a comfy drive. It wallows a bit on twisty roads, but soaks up bumps nicely and is surprisingly pleasant on the motorway. Seats aren't bad and the boot is on the small side.
Snobs and techies are unlike to enjoy the interior which is pretty plain and functional. The 'infotainment' is small and low down, but you don't have to use it for heating etc, so you can just ignore it.
