Ford transit 2018 injector seized. New engine. - Jim Morrison

Hi all

Just looking for some advice from people who might have some knowledge on transits specifically injector failure and seizure.

I have a 2018 Ford Transit van camper conversion with only 47,000 km on the clock. It's 2.0l diesel EcoBoost... I left Ireland last Thursday, on what was going to be a trip of a lifetime around Europe. . Long story short, injector failure, injector seized and now new engine required. I'm many many miles from home, in UK, with my dog and any advice would be much appreciated as the last 4 days have been a nightmare.

Thanks

Jim

This is a common fault , similar to the trafic/ vivaro models . Can’t see why it needs a new engine . There are specialists out there that can remove these . Look up injector removal www.injector-removal-service.co.uk/injector-remova...E

Thanks for reply

I got specialists in this mornings and it sheared. To be honest I didn't hold out much hope as I had good chat with mechanic yesterday and he said he wasn't willing to put any more torque on it. I just spent 2 miles walking along a motorway with a plastic bag full of my stuff and my dog on the way to Travelodge.i.'m.more it less a hobo now! I'm kind of stuck, as the camper van is my home at the moment and I many many miles from home and I have a dog with me so I don't really have the option of sitting it out at home and coming to a solution . On a more positive note, I actually have a toilet now in the hotel and don't have to scuttle around in the bushes to answer the call of nature like the last four nights . Any advice would be much appreciated.

What tool did they use to remove the injector? There’s only one tool that I know , that does the job, and it’s made by pichler .

Hi, thanks reply.

After 3 days I managed to get van to ford transit garage. They have the required tools and as I said previously the mechanic was not willing to apply any more force. I had good chat with him and he was a good lad. I didn't hold out much hope for the specialist this morning as I'm guessing they probably used the same tools only with more force, hence the shearing. I'm going to look into local garages but I'm guessing that it would be quite difficult for them to source an engine and I'm looking at the bones of two weeks as it is. It could be worse. I have a toilet now and don't have to scuttle around in the bushes answering the call of like some class of a weirdo. Think that's called winning!

Thanks

Jim

Sounds like you have a way forward anyway, but I don't really get this "not willing to apply any more force" jive.

IF the proposed next step alternative is a new engine (or more reasonably, new head) anyway I don't really see what you would have to loose.

OTOH IF we are talking about the next step being drilling it out, then that might make sense if the tool is something like a stud extractor. You dont want them to break off because then you have a hardened steel insert in the thing you might want to drill out.

Which would be bad.

Similarly I don't see how a cylinder can be destroyed by a stuck injector. At the worst its going to be the head.

Anyway, good luck, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the trip when you get going.

A new engine seems a bit excessive. Worst case would surely be a replacement cylinder head with four hopefully unseized injectors.

Hi, thanks for reply.

To be honest, I really don't know. From talking to the mechanic they were saying one cylinder is definitely destroyed and they haven't even attempted to look at the other three. It does seem a bit excessive hence why I'm looking for advice. I'm definitely going to get onto Ford UK or Ireland tomorrow to try and plead a case. This has been a common issue in 2 l EcoBoost and in 2019 it was so bad that all vans were recalled had to have the injectors replaced. I might be barking up the wrong tree but it's worth trying.

If you get stuck for a cylinder head give this company a call, they are engineers and have a good reputation. A remanufactured head will be cheaper than a genuine Ford item.

I dealt with them years ago when I had a engine shop and they know what they are doing.

And get whoever assembles the engine to slather the injectors with either copper grease or Never-Seez - they will always come out after that.

If we had a maintenance contract on engines we would remove injectors at the first service and do this - well worth it for peace of mind.

But today's computer whizz kids won't like doing that - they might get their hands dirty. then they'll get the keyboard of their laptop mucky!

Hi, thanks so much fotr taking time to reply.

I've got some success.I hope Found a guy who specialise in drilling out injectors in these cases. All going well, It's gonna cost a few hundred quid and then I'd have to replace one injector which is a long long way from engine replacement. Really nice fellow from talking to on phone and seems very confident he can do the job. I'm not going to mention the ford garage in question but I'm absolutely disgusted with their behaviour. I'm Miles and miles from home with my dog and it's been a horrible week sitting in car parks going slowly insane.. All they want to do is take my money. 7,200 is a lot of money.

Anyway, onwards and upwards. Thanks for all the replies and I will update with news if hopefully it is a success and other people can benefit from my experience.

Jim
