Best 4 x 4 for low car insurance for young driver - Kirk Jones
I am looking at buying a nearly new (less than 2 years old) 4x4 to share with my 21 son. He travels 30 miles a day to/from work, four days a week and part of the journey is on country roads with one very steep hill which can get icy in the winter.

I am looking for a trendyish 4x4 with relatively low insurance, I like Volvo XC90, but I doubt they could be considered trendy!

Any suggestions?

If you are looking for low/medium insurance and 4 wheel drive, how about a Suzuki Vitara all-grip ?

Does he currently have a car which he uses to go to work?. I ask because if the current car isn't a 4x4, then the new one doesn't need to be. I say this because I think it quite unlikely, given you want a Volvo XC90, you are going to find a car which fits your requirements and you both consider trendy.

If you really want to share a car, ask him to make a list of cars that he likes (doesn't have to be 4x4 as a modern traction control system along with decent quality winter tyres will manage pretty much any conditions you are likely to encounter), you make one too and see if there is any common ground. If there is, come back on the forum and ask about whichever car or cars you are thinking of. If there isn't?, might be better to each have your own.

I’d sooner buy him a cheap small but fun car rather than unleash an inexperienced driver in a powerful top heavy SUV. The insurance and fuel costs will be much higher and the added depreciation from the additional mileage will all combine to make a cheap second car viable, something like a Fiesta or Mazda 2. Does he really need a 4x4?

If the only reason for wanting a 4x4 is for the icy road (no requirement to go off road or tow), then get a car as suggested and possibly a spare set of rims with winter tyres on. When the car is sold you can flog the rims on Ebay, Facebook or similar sites

Suzuki Swift or Fiat Panda.

Or to avoid having the faff of a second set of winter wheels buy all season tyres like the latest Michelin Cross Climates or Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons….

Beauty being in the eye of the beholder and so on, but my wife loves her Jeep Renegade, and my 22 year old son covets it. Have to say, I quite like it too.
Hers is only 2WD and has a 1.4 petrol engine which is lively enough while being a low-ish insurance group. Gets about 40 mpg in real life use.

She’s had it for a year and a half and it has been no trouble at all.

However, a friend has the 2.0 diesel 4x4 version which he needs for work to tow a trailer in and out of muddy fields etc. He’s had his 2016 model from new and it has quite high mileage on it now being his work hack. Again he has nothing but good to say about it.

Putting aside whether you would really need 4wd, I was going to suggest a Renegade too. The 4xe has the added benefit of reasonable electric range before you have to pay for fuel. Nothing sexier than having more money (it's quite quick too). I had a Renegade as a hire car back in October and it is far better to drive than I thought it would be.

Other obvious choice is any Subaru, although I don't know about insurance.

A 4x4 with decent tyres will have more traction than front wheel drive.

A FWD with traction control and winter (or possibly cross climate) tyres will have similar traction to a 4x4 equipped with normal tyres (as most are)

Braking and cornering grip depend mainly on tyre choice. 4x4 with higher centre of gravity and confidene induced stupidity is more likely to end up in a ditch (it may get out quicker!)

If you tow trailers, go off road, have weeks of snow and ice each year, or provide a critical service (eg: doctor) then a 4x4 will likely make sense. Otherwise it is a "want to have" not a "need to have". Be clear what the real motivation is, don't create a dubious rationale.

Personally - I like the idea of a 4x4, if I had one I may very occasionally use some of its capabilities, but I don't need one. If snow and ice etc a couple of days a year makes FWD risky I can simply stay at home.

I was ambivalent about the Renegade to be honest, but “she” had set her heart on one and mostly it’s just easier to agree on such matters ;-)

Having said that, I really like it too and it’s one of those cars that just cheers you up when you drive it.

Four wheel drive adds no additional grip or cornering ability in most instances, all it adds is more traction. You’d be better in winter conditions with a simple front wheel drive motor with winter tyres fitted all round. To have a set of spare rims with winter tyres will cost far less on a Fiesta than it would on a large 4wd. High riding 4wd SUV’s are top heavy and are less capable in corners than a normal car. Many accidents happen in winter thanks to 4wd owners being overconfident.

Thanks for the replies so far.

My son currently has a 10 year old Corsa, but we are moving house soon to a rural area hence the consideration for a more suitable car.

There are 4 adults living in our household and currently 4 cars on the drive which is r unnecessary especially now that I have ‘retired’. Hence looking for a car I can share with him.

Any more suggestions appreciated!

Rural Somerset with the odd steep hill does not need a 4x4. A couple of days every few years when steep hill or muddy single track lane is snowy, icy or challenging one can usually find an alternative route and may just add a few miles to the journey.

Rural and hilly in Scotland, Northumberland, etc 20+ miles from the nearest main road is entirely different.

Budget is usually an issue - fuel and maintenance costs on a fully kitted 4x4 will test the credit card, a Suzuki Vitara 4x4 will cost little more to run than a similar size hatch.

Be clear about why you are buying. If it is need rather than want, consider the variable - tyres, ground clearance, diff locks,, entry/exit angles etc. Most 4x4 go no further off road than a car park in a field for an event, or mount a kerb on the school run.

Incidentally the insurance cost if your son (rather than you) is the main user may be an issue -

No you wouldn't, trust me.

How about less focus on what you think someone “needs” and more focus on finding cheaper to insure 4x4s…

OP: what is your budget?
Best 4 x 4 for low car insurance for young driver - Adampr

I was wondering that: budget please.

I'm guessing up to about £45k based on a less than 2 year old XC90?

I've had an idea! Toyota Yaris Cross.

Another vote for a vitara or if you fancy something smaller a swift, I had a swift 4x4 a couple of cars ago and drove it through some horrendous conditions with no trouble at all, one of the few cars I regretted selling, the other was a jeep wrangler 4x4 with the 4 litre straight 6.

Subaru perhaps?
