The tailgate lock on my 2007 Skoda Roomster has developed a mind of its own, I wonder if anyone can advise?

The fault is intermittent. About half the time it works as expected. Other times … for instance: open tailgate to put something in. Close tailgate, get in car and drive five miles, get out (all without locking or unlocking the car) and the tailgate won’t open. Using the key fob to unlock the car has no effect. The key fob has a tailgate button (which I had never used until this fault developed); pressing and holding that results in a loud clunk and the tailgate can now be opened. (Button has to be held for about a second though; a short press has no effect.)

Similarly, if the car has been locked, unlocking the car may or may not result in an unlocked tailgate.

As unlocking the car (double press on the unlock button) doesn’t always release the tailgate, it seems to be more than just the tailgate locking itself at random. (I have tried using my spare key fob but that makes no difference.)

Where do I start?

Thanks in advance.

Reading the manual might reveal something (that's not sarcasm). we have a 2014 Roomie and I frequently forget that one press of unlock only unlocks the driver's door.

Whether the boot relocks seems to depend on how it was unlocked. The point of the 'boot' button (I think) is that if the car is locked, the boot can be opened without unlocking the doors and relocks when closed. Convenient perhaps when shopping and returning to the car just to put something in the boot, but it has always struck me as increasing the chances of locking the keys in there (which my wife in fact has done).

Another oddity of this plipper is that pressing the lock button once locks the car with deadlocks and sets the movement sensors. Pressing it twice to lock leaves it less secure - I can't remember whether that unsets the deadlocks or the alarm, or both.

My Mitsubishi has 2 buttons - lock everything, or unlock everything, which I prefer. Press lock twice to deadlock. I find that much more convenient.

It could be the electrical tailgate latch in trouble. Fairly common fault on vag models .

Thank you all for your advice.

Same as my Pug 207. Never use the deadlock (except accidentally).
