I don't do an awful lot to repair my cars myself, but I'm hoping I might be able to sort out a windscreen wiper problem without having to take it to a garage. A couple of months ago, my wipers got increasingly 'lazy', doing fewer and fewer wipes and not making it all the way to the 'home' position. I read that the first thing to do was to give everything a good clean, and that got them back to normal very quickly - for a while. It started again a month or so later, and cleaning sorted it out again. Now though, it's happened again, and cleaning makes little difference this time, nor spraying the pivot point at the base of the wipers with WD40. They generally make it to the top of the first wipe and halfway back down, then stop in the middle of the windscreen. Wait 30 seconds or so, and try again, and they go back down, up again, and back down to the middle of the screen again. I've been advised this might be enough for someone experienced to suggest whether its the relay, the wiper motor, or something else entirely. Any suggestions on what the problem is likely to be, and whether it's simple to sort myself?

Thanks,

Sam

Very likely to be the wiper linkage is seizing up . You need to remove the complete linkage and motor assembly from the car and dismantle it . Usually the spindle shafts are the issue.

Thank you. Is this a fairly straightforward job? Would you expect the parts to need replacing or just dismantling, cleaning and reassembling?

Usually just taking apart the system including the pivot shafts and regrease is enough to restore operation. Might be cheaper to replace. Whole linkage on flea bay for around £30

I would have thought that if this is the cause, WD40 would loosen the spindles without dismantling, assuming access is possible. At least as a first attempt. If wipers are refusing to park, you may need to replace the motor or the whole assembly - used ones from E-bay perhaps.

WD40, though quite penetrative, isn't much of a lubricant, so may only have a temporary effect.

If you don't want to dismantle, clean and grease (the best option) oil or perhaps a spray grease would be an intermediate approach.

I sometimes back up grease by first wrapping the surfaces where relative movement occurs (eg brake pins) with PTFE thread tape.

Perhaps the motor needs new brushes.

If you go to YouTube and type in the search How to Replace a Mk4 Wiper Linkage there is a 5:15 video by IDParts that shows it nicely (other videos there as well). Spraying WD40 down the wiper shafts does not lube much of the mechanism as you will see. On older cars you may need the puller they use to remove the wipers from the spindles but you may get away with levering off with screwdrivers and a block of wood.

WD40 is a first-try approach to identify the root cause. After that, proper lubrication or replacement should be a cure.
