As in subject. The boot lid can be lifted easily but then slowly lowers.

I assume it's something to do with struts. Do things need replacing or can they be prepared ?

What sort of cost am I looking at please ?

New struts needed. Change as a pair . Check MB prices first before going elsewhere. They may be cheaper than you think .

Thanks for prompt, clear and helpful reply. Much appreciated.

For a ten-year-old car? I would cut a length of cane to suit and leave it in the boot.

Mercedes AW169. 2011 - Boot lid not staying up - wantstolearn

Trust good quality cane. Haha.

The car has fsh , mots with no advisories, immaculate bodywork and 47,000 miles on clock.

Everything about car is good and and well maintained. Rather have it than most modern cars.

If your going to use cane may I suggest a nice length of split cane? :)

I restore vintage split cane fishing rods as a little sideline and am sure I could supply a suitable piece!

Seriously though a new pair of genuine struts are your best bet. Give GSF ( motor factors for all things German, Swedish and french) a call, they normally can supply OE parts at a fraction of the cost.

Pah! An elaborate, massively overkilled (and overskilled) way of ruining perfectly good bamboo.

Maybe not QUITE as overkill as a pair of Mercedes OEM struts, but close in the consumerist conspiracy continium.

Worth checking the cost for a generic strut here:

One car I had some years ago had struts which were sod all use in winter but once the summer arrived and presumably the gas expanded in the heat they worked perfectly.

Take a look at the body of the strut , there should be the MB part # . Possibly starts with A 168/169 . You can use this to cross reference to other makers . The rise and hold qualities of these gas struts is critical. My friend bought some generic struts for his A class , they were worse than the ones we took off . Ended up using genuine parts . Btw , the tailgate on these is made of plastic.

There should be some used ones on E-bay .... a lot cheaper than OEM anyway, and usually an easy DiY fit.

I've bought ebay ones before for 10+ year old Peugeots and Kias, they've worked absolutely fine and really easy to swap.

Thanks.

Got a pair for £33 from sgs, 2 yr warranty. Happy.

For a ten-year-old car? I would cut a length of cane to suit and leave it in the boot.

One of the boot struts failed on my TR7 when it was about 30yrs old. I keep an umbrella there - it's just the right length. Apathy and miserliness preclude replacement.

I'd like to say I use a free bit of bamboo harvested from a local hillside, but unfortunately the 36 year old struts on the Daihatsu still work fine.

Should have got a Merc.

Just a quick update to recommend GSF motor factors. Excellent service, product and value

They will be my first call in the future.

Thanks again for the helpful posts.
