Mini Cooper petrol - Mini 62 reg limp mode fault codes P1057 and P1062 - Floyd

A few weeks ago my Mini went Into limp mode, code reader shows P1057 and P1062 which suggests a valve timing problem. Took it to my usual garage who couldn't find the cause but cleared the fault codes, and topped up the oil. It ran fine for the next 80 miles or so then it went into limp mode again with the same fault codes. Took it to and independent Mini specialist who cleared the fault codes and couldn't get the error to recur, he cleaned up something called a vanos unit. After another 70 miles it was back in limp mode with the same codes.

I thought that fault codes indicate exactly what is wrong, but maybe that's my misunderstanding ! If there's no alternative then I may take it to a Mini dealership to see if they can fix it, but that might end up costing more than the car is worth!

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately diagnostic trouble codes do not give the exact fault . If it was that easy , everyone would be fixing cars in 10 mins . Trouble codes highlight the areas to be investigated for issues . Very often codes are the result of another underlying problem . It looks like your issues are related to the timing chain and/ or vanos units . Pretty standard faults on these Minis with the Peugeot prince engine .

Thanks. Any idea why the engine would run OK for 70 to 80 miles after the fault was cleared? I would have thought that it should go back into limp mode within a few miles if the fault is serious.

Clearing the codes resets the system and allows the engine to relearn the drive cycle . However, after increasing miles , the parameters go out sync and the fail light will illuminate. It’s probably using oil , another issue with these engines.
