MG HS 1.5 Turbo Petrol - Wrong engine oil used during service. - crowncd

I apologise in advance as this may seem a very simple question to most.

I've just had my 2 year old MG HS car serviced at an MG dealership and on looking at the garage's invoice notice that the engine oil they used is 5/30W. The handbook states that the oil should have been 0W/20.

I was surprised that an oil of a different specification was used by a main dealer and am concerned that it may adversely affect the car. It's also annoying as I keep in stock a small quantity of the correct oil in case I need a top up and I don't feel I should mix the grades.

Should I return to the garage and insist they replace the oil or am I being overly cautious? Would the fact that they used the wrong oil affect the warranty?

Many thanks for any advice.

I wonder if they'll tell you they used the correct oil, but made a mistake on the invoice??????

0/20 is the preferred grade . But as stated above, does the garage invoice 5/30 whatever , even if the correct oil is used . Best check with the service dept . 5/30 is not going to cause any immediate issues .

Some vehicles can use different grades, but some can't. Mine has the grade stamped on the oil filler cap, so that is all that should be used.

If the grade isn't right you need it changing, you paid for a service in line with manufacturers specification, if it isn't 0w20 and it should be you haven't received what was paid for.

If you're not seeing any problems, I wouldn't worry too much either way

I would think it is more important for the oil to have the correct ingredients - additives if you like. The simple difference in viscosity alone between 0/20 and 5/30 will be negligible.

Unlike the difference in price!

Not at all. A very good question.

Most certainly.

am I being overly cautious?

No. Modern turbo engines are fussy about oil.

Would the fact that they used the wrong oil affect the warranty?

No idea, but keep a record of their negligence just in case of the unlikely event of a future problem.

I can't speak for MG, but sometimes oil specs change after long term testing and feedback from owners and dealers. My car doesn't use the same oil as the now out-of-date drivers handbook recommends. It also doesn't follow the 20,000 miles service interval.

Maybe my car isn't modern enough, but it has a turbo and the handbook advises three different viscosity grades as being acceptable - i.e. their use will not invalidate the car's warranty. A range is advised for use in different climates, so the important variable will be engine wear during start-up.

You handbook may list 3 oils for different climates - but it'll only ever get used in one climate (unless you emigrate) so only one oil is suitable

Sorry, I disagree. To borrow an Orwellian phrase, several oils are suitable, one may be slightly more suitable than others.

Nobody knows what the "important variable" will be, but its a fair bet that the important variable for manufacturers is the minor difference in fuel economy figures, which they will quote based on the recommended skinny oil.

Just a quick 'thank you' to everyone who has replied to my original post offering advice.

I have contacted the dealership involved but as yet, have not had a response from them.
