Volkswagen T-Cross 1.5 TSI EVO DSG - Weird Noise (Sort of a Metallic Rattle) - Chopstix

Hi,

There has been this weird noise from my car which started about 3 months ago. I don’t know how to describe itAppears at anywhere below 3000 ish rpm when accelerating with about 50% throttle input. It’s fairly audible at lower speeds, if the surroundings are reasonably quiet as well, but not so much at higher speeds (above 50 mph). I have posted the link for a youtube video. I have taken the car to the dealer 3 times now and every time, they were said they couldn’t hear it. I have changed fuel from E10 unleaded to E5 Super unleaded as well, but no difference. Any help on this, as to what it could be, would be helpful. Best to watch the video with headphones. Time stamps in description. https://youtu.be/-vX6F34t368

Thanks!

Hello

The noise sounds like an issue with crankshaft bearings under full turbo boost conditions, and definitely not a good noise. It sounds too metallic to be an exhaust leak.

If it's a bearing issue it will get worse quickly... Lots of warrantee hopefully.

Always buy VAG extended warrantee between 3 and 5 years; provided that DSG clutch and engine bearing failures are covered. Trying E10 was a good idea.

Is the noise less when the car is not fully up to running temperature?

Keep listening. Try to capture the sound with the windows down at low speed and high load, perhaps in a tunnel? Also try to find a very steep hill to really load the engine up at lowish RPM. It may sound more metallic with the windows down.

Joe

Hi,

Thanks for letting me know! That really doesn’t sound good. And the car is only about 6 months old. I will be part exchanging this car for a Tiguan 2.0 TDI I have on order (likely 7 months wait) but just wanted to sort this just in case.

Regarding the noise when car is not up to temp, I usually only accelerate with minimum throttle until it’s warmed up, but will have to try it tomorrow, and will let you know.

And yes, I will try to find a tunnel or a hill and see if it can be heard better.

Problem is the mechanic at the dealer saying he couldn’t hear it, even after showing the video and taking them on a test drive.

Thanks!
