Agreed, but Europe-wide pre-Brexit would not have been a dissimilar situation to the US?

People are maybe more likely to undertake a ball joint job (or similar) when they can get the tool for free. It would hopefully incentivise parts sales. Seems to be available at almost all car parts stores in the States. It's a shame that we haven't followed suit. It's very annoying to buy a £40-£80 kit to do a job you only do once/twice in a car's lifetime.

Yeah, have always preferred DIY. And I do not remember any job that I've done that would be less at a cheap garage (both parts and tools inclusive!). Generally, DIY savings can't be understated.

Unless it's swapping a bulb or battery out, I think I could buy all of the tools required (ratchets, breaker bars, sockets) twice over on most of the jobs I've done. I have never taken into account my own wage though. If I were to 'pay' myself minimum wage, it would probably just about stop making sense (tools + consumables + parts + time > garage cost).

If the work is enjoyable to you though, I would always do it. For example, I'd much sooner employ a cleaner than a mechanic!!!

I have a vague recollection that quite a while ago a chain was offering the hire of workshop space and the use of a garage ramp system but no tools for the home mechanic. I cannot remember the details but it obviously did not pay

Nothing in business is free. It’s recovered somewhere in the deal. Parts cost may be higher. Or maybe your data is used for future sales or sold on to other companies. After all if you have borrowed a “free” tool you will undoubtedly have given address and.ID and quite possibly email, car details and credit card info.

It might still be a good deal but not truly free.
