Yeah, have always preferred DIY. And I do not remember any job that I've done that would be less at a cheap garage (both parts and tools inclusive!). Generally, DIY savings can't be understated.
Unless it's swapping a bulb or battery out, I think I could buy all of the tools required (ratchets, breaker bars, sockets) twice over on most of the jobs I've done. I have never taken into account my own wage though. If I were to 'pay' myself minimum wage, it would probably just about stop making sense (tools + consumables + parts + time > garage cost).
If the work is enjoyable to you though, I would always do it. For example, I'd much sooner employ a cleaner than a mechanic!!!
