I think I have found the perfect vehicle for me to move into an EV for my work. Perfect regarding its dimensions (similar length and width as a Honda Jazz!), its payload, its range(*), and its looks(!).

This is a German company who have come up with a brilliantly simple modular light electric utility vehicle concept. You have the base architecture which includes the chassis, running gear and cab. On to this you choose from 8 modules, whichever suits your needs best, but the beauty is (if you have the space) you can choose more than one and swap them at will. Apparently no special tools are required.

It has an 'in hub' electric motor in each corner and the standard battery pack will give a range of up to 200km, but (*) this can be extended with two extra packs to give a range of up to 600km. Maximum speed is quoted as being >100km/h, which is absolutely fine for my needs.

Price?, for the basic chassis plus van ('universal') module, the price is just over 20k Euros, the two extra battery packs would be another 1500 Euros each, and those prices include VAT. For comparison, prices for a Nissan E-NV200 van starts at about £28k (inc VAT).

I do realise I may be in a minority liking this, but I think it looks great!, like a Tonka toy made real, especially the 'off road' version (an extra 2000 Euros).

Don't know if the above (odd looking) link will work, but the website is, electricbrands.de

Of course I'm not getting too excited at the moment as there are one or two hurdles to overcome, not least how I'd manage to rustle up the money to buy!. Also, at present, the nearest 'retailer' to me is not very close at all being just outside Durham.

You're not in a minority, BBD, I like the versatility and the looks too. My only reservation is how close to the windscreen you have to sit. Having been in a estate car which was concertina-ed, I'm sold on the concept of crumple zones.

The campervan version looks interesting.

For me, this is still the biggest downside of EVs over ICE - if well-maintained, ICE cars will rarely need 4-figure spending (and certainly not in the range of £4.5k in one go), spreading out the cost of wear-and-tear/life-expired maintenance over many years.

es, I had been thinking about that. But I have given serious consideration to other commercial vehicles (not officially available in the UK) of a 'cab over' design and dismissed them not because of safety concerns, more because of the logistics of servicing and parts. So while it would be in my mind, I feel that the combination of my driving style (never going very quickly, always leaving a big gap to the vehicle in front for the best view of what is going on around me) and the general traffic behaviour of the roads I drive (the 'maniacs' are invariably going in the same direction as me at both ends of the day) makes me feel the risk is minimal.

But I also need to be realistic and accept that much as I like it, it probably isn't going to happen. As good value as it is (IMO), £20k is still £20k!.

The campervan version looks interesting.

Yeah, it is a cool looking thing, the off-road version could be the ultimate 'wild camper'. 1200nm of torque(!) means that you could drive up the side of a cliff (grip permitting!).

The solar roof seems to be a trick other manufacturers have missed (as far as I know).

I don't like the looks of it much, but it certainly seems highly practical. Bravo to the firm that dared to be so original.

I like it..!...it's quirky but so useful..there's enough samey blandness around so a bit of "difference" is welcome.

Reads more like a crowdfunding appeal than an opportunity to actually buy one.

Not sure how or why you'd come to that conclusion?.

Scrolling down the home page, the first link you come to is to the configurator (y'know, the opportunity to buy one).

If you scroll past that, then you get to the link explaining the modular system.

If you scroll past that, you get to the media links.

If you scroll past that (more or less to the bottom of the page), you will indeed find the link to crowdfunding opportunities, just above subscribing to the newsletter at the very bottom. Hardly 'in your face' or pushy?

One of the videos I watched on the XBUS featured a few cars/vehicles from other smallish German start up companies. One of these was the Sono Sion, which is a family car covered in solar panels. It does give it a kind of unfinished look, but I'm sure plenty of folk wouldn't worry about that!.
