Vauxhall Corsa - Corsa master cylinder replacement cost? - Kts

Hi, hoping someone can give me some advice!

The clutch on my 65 reg Corsa has recently started sticking to the floor, and when this happens I'm unable to put the car into gear. I am however able to use my foot to lift the pedal back up from the floor if this happens, allowing me to continue driving.

Today I took the car to the Vauxhall dealer, and they said that they think the problem is with the master cylinder or slave cylinder, but they'd have to strip the vehicle to find out, and apparently that would take 6 hours and cost £720.

Obviously I'm no expert but just from doing some googling of master cylinder replacement, £720 seems extremely steep (again, I admit I'm no expert and don't really know what I'm looking for). Does anyone know how much something like this would cost to fix? Does £720 sound reasonable?

Thanks in advance.

It won't be the cost of the cylinder itself, but the labour of dismantling (don't know how awkward that might be) plus the change of hydraulic fluid. Plus of course (possibly) just finding out what the problem is.

But a VX dealer will be your most expensive option. Try a local independent if you know of one.

I think this is quite a common problem, but I can't recall what. Perhaps a search of forums?

I seem to recall from my decades with pre-2007 Vauxhalls that the master cylinder seals can invert when worn - the short-term answer is to fit new seals but the long-term is to replace the whole master cylinder.

The OP might do better to just get a good independent to fit a new master cylinder.

On some cars the slave cylinder is only accessible when removing the gearbox, so I assume the garage are pricing that in. You're then into the decision depending on the car's mileage whether it's worth swapping the clutch while the gearbox is off. One for a good independent garage.

First thing I would do, and have done in the past when I've been faced with this problem is to change the fluid. It won't cost much to do, and it'll do no harm. But it may cure the problem.

Only slightly relevant, but when it happened to me on an 1800 Marina it was the slave cylinder,

Can't remember how (or if) I determined that, but another one from a scrappy fixed it. Was about a tenner I think.

Unfortunately driving it home without a clutch I managed to break a piston ring, which was a bit more complicated to fix, though not expensive.
