Toyota RAV4 2006/7 - Casing for car keys - spannerman

Hello, I have just bought this RAV4 and the key casings are quite worn, one is split. Can I buy some kind of casing and put the innards into it without key cutting etc ? I have looked on ebay but none look quite right. The car docs say 2007 january so presumably it's more of a 2006 ? many Thanks

A son had a 2006 Rav with remote buttons that were dodgy.

He bought a new case on Ebay, transferred the key blade, electronics & fitted a new battery - 100% Result. He repeated a similar problem with his Lexus - again success.

Admittedly that was around 9 years ago & things will have changed in that time.

Timpsons, shoe repairers, seem to offer an upgrade to dodgy remotes, a lot less than a main dealer but I do not know the cost.

I would think that there is a replacement available on ebay.

However, when transferring the blade etc. make sure that you remember to transfer the immobiliser transponder (very small) - read too many stories of people who didn't & realised too late after bins emptied ...

Hello, just what I want to do. I can't seem to find one the right shape. The car is recistered Jan 2007 so presumably a 2006 model, but that is squarer and the two buttons are offset where mine are in line and a 'pear' shape. I might phone a dealer . Thanks for the response.

Hi there, I have a 2017 Avensis Business Edition Plus. Burrows Toyota in Sheffield quoted me £221.77 for a replacement key in March 2019 and this morning they have quoted me £318.20 for exactly the same key – a 44% increase in just over 2 years. I questioned Burrows on whether this was correct and a very rude man there told me it is correct and that I should “blame Toyota – they set the prices”. Can I check if Burrows Toyota are telling me the truth – has the cost of a key really gone up by 44% since 2019? Thanks.

Just call another dealer, ask them the present price

I have a 55 plate Rav 4 & the keys have the off set square buttons as you describe. Your 2006/7 will be the mark 3 hence, l would assume, the teardrop buttons.

There was a service on eBay where you could send the worn or defective key & they would replace the casing. I used it a few years back for a BMW key & worked well.

I have found some but they say that the key part cannot be removed to use the old one. Not sure how hard it is to get it cut ? Maybe the only option. Thanks
