Our Micra's brakes have been squeaking (2000 W). ATS chappy looked at them and said that there was nothing wrong with the brakes and that there was probably little to be done about the squeak. That was 6 weeks ago. Now the squeak has steadily got worse and is more like a high pitched whistle! Is there anything to be done!?

Hey there,
My past experience with "squeaky" brakes has usally been the result of dusty brake calipers. Ive got a few cars, in particular one of mine, Golf VR6 has the same problem. VW say the problem is caused by the above and can be solved by replacing the calipers...dont know if thats any help but hey!!!
You could always ask Nissan... people like the RAC, ATS etc are not always correct, they do a good job but cant help as well as the profs.

If you can do the job yourself then whip the pads out and blow the dust away with an airline (should really 'vacuum' it away, to be correct). Check anti-squeal shims are in place. If they are, then smear a smidgen of copper grease on the back face of the pad (NOT friction surface!).
You can also get an 'antisqueal' paste - its a bit like Hylomar Blue, if you know what that is. You could get some from a motor factors.
New calipers would be unnecessary.

The older Micras used to suffer from the back plate touching the disc sometimes more noticeable on cornering when the load is one way or other.Maybe your problem .

Thanks, all. Some really useful and practical advice. That's what makes the backroom such a great place.
