Hyundai trajet - Bump stops - Notabeetle

My 2004 Trajet has just failed MOT, the "major." defect will be straightforward for a mechanic to repair, but the "minor" defect is proving a headache - missing bump stops both sides rear axle. Bump stops for other cars seem to be around £10 each, but the only place that can quote to supply me is a hyundai dealer, at £82 each.

I'm reluctant to spend this on an old, high-mileage car, but it also seems a shame to scrap it for something minor.

If the car is presented for re-test with the major defect repaired, is it possible that the minor defect will be overlooked? (I'm in Northern Ireland, so the rules may be applied differently from GB). Alternatively can anyone recommend a supplier?

Thanks in advance

Scrapyard?

Scrapyard?

That is probably my only hope now. :(

It just seems odd that I can't find another supplier at a reasonable price.

At prices like that, there will usually be an aftermarket supplier. I presume you have tried E-bay ?

Yes, for days on end!

One company had a picture labelled as a bump stop, and a part number, but was out of stock. I got the same part number from a different supplier but when it arrived it was the shock boot, not the bump stop.

Few years ago I dropped the sump on the Skywing and in the process realised the engine mountings were split. I considered casting new ones from eurethane. IIRC there was a window sealant made by 3M that people had used for suspension bushes with success.

If its good enough for that, should be good enough for bump stops, and they won't be functionally tested for the MOT, just have to be there. If its a complex shape you might need a genuine example to mould from, though.

In practice my temporary lash up with cable ties has held, so I never tried to source the material, which would likely have been difficult or impossible here anyway.

I did, however, try and use a (silicone?) rubber sealant to make a female mould for something else. While that was unsuccessful, because I couldnt get the object to release, the black sealent seemed pretty tough, wasn't expensive and would probably have been adequate for bump stops

Thanks - I've asked a mechanic if it's possible to improvise something. I don't even know what the things look like; I can't shake the image from my mind of a Kong dog toy, I'm not sure if I dreamt that or did actually see it somewhere. If only it was that simple!

It probably is that simple.

Not familiar with Kong dog toys, but if they are about the right size and will bolt in place they'd probably do.

Probably have to be black though.

How about spring assisters? I remember fitting some that were effectively long bump stops. Made the back end very stiff and uncomfortable for back passengers, but stiffened it up no end and improved the handling:
