Vauxhall Insignia - Vauxhall Insigina 2016, snapped Aux belt - JonnyH88

Hi everyone, first I'll detail some basic info for my situation.

in June 2020, we bought a used vehicle from a Vauxhall dealership, a 66 plate Insignia with around 86k on the clock. We put the vehicle in for a full service in March 2021.

We have done 7,000 miles since buying it, and maybe 1/2,000 since the service. A few weeks ago our car broke down and I had to get it towed to a garage. My local Vauxhall garage(not the one we bought it from) have had a look, and said the Aux belt has snapped and got sucked up into the engine. The engine is now damaged beyond sensible repair and they have suggested an engine replacement. They're quoting £6000 for a new engine as they can't source a reconditioned one.

Vauxhall have said they Aux belt should be replaced every 90,000. The vauxhall garage doesn't think we have a head office case for complaint about the engine sucking up the belt as it should have been changed, but have said they are willing to support us if we do complain to them for such a young vehicle having engine damage.

The independent garage that gave it a full service have said its not something they generally check, and as long as its not damaged with wear and tear, they wouldn't replace it unless it was damaged(despite its age and suggested replacement after 90k miles).

I'm just at a loose end here, nobody is taking responsibility, we bought it from a vauxhall dealership and paid £7k for it, driven 7,000 miles and it's now a dead vehicle that is good for scrap unless we pay the £6k for an engine replacement. I've no idea what to do and I'm really angry it has ended like this so soon after buying it and having maintained it fully as needed.

Has anyone got any suggestions on what action I should take here? I'm just so depressed that it's seemingly a dead vehicle and a total waste of £7k.

Tricky one . Firstly auxiliary drive belts are usually good for at least 150 k miles . If they fail prematurely, then it’s usually the result of another problem . Possibly a seized pulley or tensioner . Think this scenario needs to be investigated first . S/ hand engine may be your best option .

Hi there. Thanks for the reply! The pulley had snapped off(come out anyway, there was no thread damage and the mechanic just put a new pulley on)when a replacement belt was added(as that was believed to be the original issue).

I'm happy for a used engine replacement, but I'm being warned not to due to the fact its near 100k miles, but it's a diesel so I would have thought that was OK. Regardless, they said its risky to just replace the engine with a used one.

have you tried to find an engine via fer.co.uk ?

I haven't no.

To be honest I'm considering going the trading standards route. I've been told by the garage thay serviced it that the belt has a 100k life(after checking the chassis) but vauxhall said to Mr its 90k.

So either it hasn't even serviced correctly, or the part was damaged before expected, and thus Vauxhall should be responsible.

I don't really know, I'm looking down all avenues at this point as the total repair cost means it's worth a try!

Not fully understanding this . If the pulley has snapped off , then it’s not the fault of the belt. Service life of belt is 6 years or 100k miles .

So I broke down, and had a mechanic come and take a look once I had it towed back. He noticed a pulley had come off, and the aux belt had snapped. So he resumed it was to do with the pulley coming off or the belt snapping.

He replaced the pulley, and put a new belt on and it still didn't start. At his point he believed some of the belt had got sucked into the engine(what turned out to be true.

He was very confused thay the pulley had come off, and cleanly too as the thread was still fine.

The only way the pulley can come off is if the bolt was loose . Has the cam belt been replaced recently ?

Nope. No belt replacement in its entire work history. So I just don't get how the pulley can come off and not leave the thread damaged.

Bizarre situation. However You may not need a new engine . If the timing belt has been damaged by the auxiliary drive belt , then you need to investigate the possibility that this engine has designed fracture camshaft rocker arms that break rather than allow the valves to come into contact with the pistons . This means a top end repair, instead of a major strip down .

Actually, the piston has to contact, i.e. smash hard against, the valve to cause the sacrificial rocker arm to break rather than terminally damaging the valve or the piston - hopefully.
