I have been offered a Peugeot 306 GLX 1.9TD on and R plate for a very good price. Full service history, mint condition but it has done 115,000 miles and of course so has all the running gear. I?m not used to cars with such a high mileage but the price is very tempting for a commuter car for my daughter. Any opinions/experience on how tough these diesels are or is this a barge pole job ?? I don\'t know anything about Peugeots, but a lot about high mileages. 115,000 is tiny by modern standards. It should be nicely run-in, and somebody else has shouldered all the depreciation for you.

Both our Citroen\'s have the same engine/basic design and their running gear is as good as new at similar mileages. I\'d say it will have another 100K in it.
Is this mileage is supported by a history??
I\'d be even more keen if it had been serviced a 6K intervals.

speaking with complete ignorance about Peugeot, but most cars seem to need a cambelt at 60000 intervals. Maybe someone else can confirm this. MAybe something to take into account.

My Dads got a P reg 306 TD in 145K at the moment and it runs very nicely. Outside of service items, the clutch and rear wheel bearings have been replaced but that\'s about it.

From Car by car breakdown
Spate of conrod failures on 1997 -1998 R and S reg 1.9 XUTD diesels; one case of a late reg T: too many to attribute merely to running with low oil levels. Seems only to affect cars built from April 1997 with DHY (not DHX) serial number engines.
If yours is unaffected then assuming a good price -buy it. How much is it?

My 405 with the XUD 1905 non-turbo went to 251,000 with not much bother. So 115,000 is not much at all if it has been looked after
A key issue is the cooling system and integrity of the head and gasket. These occasionally give problems if overheating has taken place. Typically when the cooling fans fail to cut in when towing.
As the learned M.M. has said, the best way to fix these heads is not to let them overheat in the first place.
Having said that, I had a weeping gasket for around 50K with no coolant loss and appreciable loss in performance.
Check the timing belt changes and the rollers.
Apart from this, if the price is right, I would go for it. The XUD is very reliable if looked after and can cover interstellar mileages.

The car has a full main dealer service history with mostly 9000 miles service intervals and a few repairs, wheel bearings, clutch, 2nd cam belt change and a few bits. Less than a year old Peugeot allows due to leaking rims ( corrosion ). Bought it as an ex demonstrator and has been the only driver only, mostly long distance driving. Regards Peter

I would agree with the others about possible high mileage, oil changes etc. My own 1.9 petrol is on 188k and the diesel 162k. However, to avoid head/gasket problems the antifreeze should be changed every 20k or 2 years, but whichever comes first!

The long distance stuff may offset the longer oil change intervals, i.e. may have prevented the oil from degarading too much.
I recall that the general consensus of this group is that 6K changes are best, regardless of what the manufacturer says.
(and are 12K changes a manufacturers conspiricy to remove used cars off the market in a few years time??)
My Pug 405 had 88K when I bought it, and the bonnet leading edge was healthily chipped, indicating a life on motorways and at high speed. And it ran to 251K. And would have gone further, but that\'s another story...(see archive - \"Goodbye 405\")
