For my sins I am in the process of replacing the Head/gasket on a T-reg 306 diesel ( 1868cc version ). Can anyone tell me 1. If I need to replace the head-bolts 2. What is the torque and sequence
3 What Peugeot charge for this job - it\'s a right pig !
4 Any pitfalls - other than don\'t attempt it .

1. 2 types of bolts fitted - 1st is 120 mm long when new (measured from under head to end of bolt) and has a flat end, 2nd is 124 mm long when new (measured from under head to end of bolt) and has a protruding tip
If any of bolts have stretched to more than :
1st type 121.5 mm - measured from under head to end of bolt
2nd type 125.5 mm - measured from under head to end of protruding tip of bolt
then all bolts must be replaced as a set.
But really it's not worth not replacing them all anyway!!
2. Phase 1 - 2 da.Nm
Phase 2 - 6 da.Nm
Phase 3 - Angle tighten 180°
Peugeot say to run a M12 X 1.50 tap down the cylinder block threads to ensure they're clean before refitting the head - make sure you clean the crap out and that the holes are dry.
Peugeot say to grease the threads and under the heads of the bolts (Molykote G Rapid Plus grease) - but I think that means used bolts, because they also say "do not lubricate the new bolts" make of that what you will . . .
3. Sorry - no idea - try ringing round for quotes
4. Depends what you've done before - not that bad

Cheers Jeremy, though not sure what you mean by 2 da nm, and 6 da nm. Do you mean 20nm then 60nm ?
As far as taking heads off this has been the most problematical so far, I've done hundreds in my time. Nothing is accessible without first removing two / three other things. poxy little 5mm allen key headed bolts that round off etc etc But there again it's a peugeot!!

Sorry - I knew I'd forgotten something - had to buy a nice new shiny (& metric-only!!) torque wrench last year ;>)
You're right:
Phase 1 - 2 daN.m = 20 Nm/15 lbf ft
Phase 2 - 6 daN.m = 60 Nm/44 lbf ft
As to whether its fiddly or not - have you ever done a BX TurboD? I did once, and I've never been able to look at a BX since without wanting to plant a sledgehammer in its bonet!!
|
Can't recall doing the turbo version, but I won't now !!
I have since found out that book time for R&R cyl head and gasket on the 306D is 8.5 hrs and further time for the Timing belt. That's about £700 labour at Main agent rates !!
BTW if you see a 306D with a sledgehammer in it's bonnet that'll be the one I've just worked on, but I'll blame you!!

Why is it that head gaskets need replacing on diesels more than on a petrol car? I recall that even toyota diesel need replacement head gaskets at relatively low mileages (90k and above).
Even on a freinds diesel toyota they had the gasket replaced twice because first time it wasn't skimmed.

I suspect it's to do with the higher compression ratio in diesel engines
