Ford Torneo Connect - Faulty EGR valve or Injector? - Anna_T

Hi there,
I bought a second hand Torneo Connect, 2008 model about 2 years ago. August last year, check engine light and loss of power so the car stopped. The garage I took it to said it was diagnosing errors in EGR valve and the second injector. We changed the EGR valve. 9 months later the same problem, I sent it back to the original garage, they said that a faulty butterfly valve to the EGR was stopping it from working properly, so changed that. Now 3 weeks later, same problem again, Check engine light, loss of power, car won´t run properly. This seems to happen when I´m on the motorways. But since then I have moved cities.
Took it to a different garage in my new city, they say two errors diagnosed: the same 2 as before: EGR valve and injector 2.
I told them the EGV valve was changed and then checked 3 weeks ago.
So they say, send it back to the garage (as it´s still under guarentee for the parts) or change the injector and see what happens.
An injector is an expensive job to do.
I definately trust this garage more than the last one.
The last one claimed they had checked it and it was working...
I don´t know what to think.
I seem to be spending a lot of money on this car this year and am not sure if its worth it.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Anna

Looking at your symptons, I would say the injector is more likely to be the problem .

Cant be of specific help, since I have no personal experience of 21st century cars, and don't want any, but I do know that a lot of garages with experience of 21st century cars don't know what they are doing with them.

The tendency is to change whatever reports the error, though the fault may lie elsewhere.

The Honda Accord I was running recently was reporting insufficient EGR flow, and "therefore" had been fitted with a shiny new EGR valve, which hadn't fixed it. This was unsurprising since the EGR path was completely clogged with soot.

In one of the recent South Main Auto video's, he investigates a Jeep that, IIRC had been recently fitted with 4 new injectors and an EGR valve, but continued to report faults. These components shared a common earth. The earth was bad.

I'd say you either (a) need to find someone who actually does diagnostics (though I dunno how you do that) or (b) find someone who specialises in your make, who may have seen the problem before.

I suppose another option would be to post on a Ford (Transit?) Owners Forum, where, if they cant diagnose themselves, they might be able recommend someone.
