I've just seen a neighbour being dropped off and the car then being driven off with a very small child standing on the driver's lap with its outstretched arms holding onto the steering wheel. Apart from interfering with the driver's ability to control the vehicle, the probability must be very high that the child would be killed in the event of an accident that deployed the airbag. It would be bad enough that the child wasn't in a properly fitted child seat, but that situation was just completely i****ic!

So many m****s out there and just not enough time to mention them all!. That is a cracker though.

I remember when I was a bus driver, seeing a car which was in front of me, pulling into the right hand side of a two way street. The driver then gets out (on to the pavement), gets a fold up wheelchair out the boot and proceeds to get a disabled passenger out of the front passenger seat into said wheelchair, in the road!. I was absolutely flabbergasted to see such i****ic irresponsible stupidity, especially seeing as it would have taken about a minute to take an alternative route which led to the same space but with the passenger side at the kerb.

So many accounts, so little time!

(no disrespect to you, BBD) The bus driver who was running late (and getting later every stop, due to extra passengers) that the bus 15 mins behind caught up and overtook him as he took on passengers half way to High Barnet.

This obviously was the 'final straw' moment, as he then floored it, rapidly catching up the bus in front just as we reached the edge of town, then he decided to overtake (one lane each way at 8am in traffic, BTW) at 50-60mph (the other bus driver obviously sped up to block him) on a busy main road that has a 30 limit.

It scared the living **** out of everyone on board - fortunately after some of us piped up and begged the driver to slow down and pull back into the correct lane, he finally did. I'm surprise we didn't have a serious accident.

I'm glad I bought my Micra (first car) not long after!

A couple have moved into the house opposite. They've a garage and a driveway, but they park on the road. They stop and get their children out of the RH door, into the road, where they let them toddle off on their own. I guess the yougest is about two.

None taken Andy, I am well aware that bus drivers can be terrible drivers too!.

I am curious about the incident though. The only 'rational' reason I can think for the driver to do that would be if it was two separate companies competing for the same passengers, though it doesn't excuse driving like that in any way.

When I drove for Stagecoach, if the bus behind caught up and overtook me (which would be another Stagecoach bus) for whatever reason, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Nope - same bus company, same route (107 Edgware to Barnet via Borehamwood). I think the driver of the bus I was on got so riled up because he was already running about 10 minutes late when I got on in Borehamwood (half way), and as such, had to pick up more passengers than usual at each stop (i.e. some who would've got the next bus 15 mins later on the timetable), which made him even more late.

By the time we got to the edge of Borehamwood by the A1, the bus next on the timetable had caught up and passed us just after the A1 roundabout. I think our driver just lost it (probably thinking he wouldn't get a break at the journey's end), the red mist went up as the other one (practically empty) overtook as ours stopped to take on passengers.

This was some time ago (around 1997/98), so I'm not sure which company was running that route at the time. All I can remember was that the bus was a single decker and red. :-)

Below is a link to the bit he was going toe-to-toe with the other driver once he'd caught up. If you view it (Google Streetview), you'll see why it so dangerous, especially in the morning rush hour:

www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.652886,-0.2100455,3a,75y...n

And no, that wasn't the bus! Coming up to a double roundabout junction though.

Well, at least if we did have an accident, Barnet General Hospital was just a few hundred yards away.

It might be that in their minds they park on the road just to prevent anyone else from doing so on what they believe to be ‘their’ piece of the road.

I believe that is the car equivalent of the 'German towels on the sun lounger' routine.

Near neighbours of mine often do this (one has one car and two allocated parking spaces no further away from his home than the communal visitor spot) so any visitors of his can then either use his empty allocated space and thus guarantee them two spaces that no-one else can use (we have a parking permit system in place, including for visitors).

What they don't account for is people like me getting wind of it and reporting their car to the ticketing firm, who then will ticket them if their car is in the visitor space unattende for more than 15 mins at any time of the day.

Sounds harsh, but we have only 29 visitor spaces (including 3 allocated for disabled people only) for 136 properties and narrow streets that don't allow on-street parking. It's the only way we can discourage lazy and inconsiderate residents from stealing/bagging spaces, as well as deter people trying to park for free for the local station or other business.

then being driven off with a very small child standing on the driver's lap with its outstretched arms holding onto the steering wheel.

I`ve seen that happen in some vans as I have been driving and you do not expect to see a child on the lap of a driver steering a van, appears to be funny to the drivers even when they have a close shave with another car because the driver cannot steer properly

as for children being let out of cars on the road for schools, it happens a lot around Bromley especially with large motors these drivers have difficulty parking so stop in the middle of the road to let the children off?

Local corner shop is on a fairly wide road.

Council houses around there have all been "done up" at huge cost around £40-50K - new roofs, walls & roof insulated, new windows / doors etc.- all ECO upgrades to 1930s homes.

Because of the volume of parked cars in the street all the houses have had their gardens dug out driveways installed, kerbs dropped, new pavements, walls built to hold back the earth etc etc

Has the road safety / parking been improved? NO -

If they park in their new driveway other locals/neighbours block the car in. So we now have megabucks spent on driveways & walls - a lot neater than the unkept gardens but unused and you still cannot park near the corner shop to buy a pint of milk or a paper.

So if you lived in one of those houses, would you like to have nowhere to put YOUR car so that occasional buyers of milk or papers could park there as required ?

Could always walk, as presumably 'corner shop' could be prefaced with 'local'?..................

>>Could always walk, as presumably 'corner shop' could be prefaced with 'local'?..................

The council house tenants all now have driveways - enough for at least 1 car, most have space for 2 but not use them as others park in front of the drive - it's all locals - there are no attractions like football grounds/cinemas etc

I cannot walk the 1.5 miles - chemotherapy has given me neuropathy - walking is difficult and the pain gets me up at 5/6 am most days.

Back in the 70s/80s we used to visit friends in Pembrokeshire. The village had one kerbside petrol station (now gone) where our host used to fill up while holding his lit fag behind his back. Never had any problem that I heard of.

Yes that does take some beating, reminds me of the days when Mechanics smoked while using petrol to clean off parts of engines and gearboxes, yet non ever caused a fire, amazing really

There was a theory that the coating of ash on the end of a cigarette insulated it so that the surface was below the ignition temperature of petrol vapour (unless you took a deep drag on the cigarette.)

I gave up cigarettes 30 years ago, but Imay borrow one from the wife, light it and stick it in the end of a tube and see if it ignites a small dish of petrol a) just smouldering b) given a hearty suck on the tube.

If I get round to it I'll post the results.

you stand more chance of a spark igniting petrol vapour than a lighted cigarette so wouldn`t bother experimenting, people used to throw ciggy butts into petrol without it going up, the petrol just put them out!

I watched in amazement yesterday as a child in passenger seat or rather wasn`t, hanging out the window trying to touch parked cars as they drove past, if he had touched one would have broken his arm and wonder why parents let them do it, some seem to be ignorant of the dangers leaning out the windows but still do it??

Saw 3 incidents last week on the Scottish trip, one very nearly involved us.

A9 at Gleneagles. On the A9 cars can simply turn across traffic when leaving in a few places despite it being a 70 mph trunk road. We are well aware of this and slow down when we see a car waiting, b***** good job we did. New Renault Captur stationary in the centre presumably waiting for us to go past, no, he was waiting for us to get closer and then played chicken at walking pace. I had to brake pretty hard (the emergency systems did not activate so must have been "reasonably" safe) but it still woke me up. The elderly couple in the car seemed oblivious to the fact they were perpendicular to fast traffic and would have been seriously injured or even been killed if stuck by a vehicle doing 70 mph (or worse if it had been an HGV).

Tesco car park in Aviemore. As we stood at the pelican crossing a brand new Vauxhall Crossland was indicating to turn into the car part at less than walking speed. An elderly lady was driving with her equally elderly husband sat beside her. We crossed the road, walked across the car park and as I opened to boot heard a loud crunch behind me. In an area of the car park that was pretty empty she had somehow hit the back corner of a parked Fiesta hard enough to destroy the front bumper, bonnet and N/S wing on the Crossland. A chap parked 2 spaces away was getting into his car and said something to the chap as he got out of the passenger seat who then started shouting angrily at him seeming to be insisting it was a "brand new car thus could not be the drivers fault", we left but I was tempted to tell him it was a brand new car no longer.

Forton Services M6. on one double row of cars the end spaces are for blue badge cars. When we walked into the services those 2 spaces were empty. 10 minutes later we came out and a car was "parked" across the 2 blue badge spots at a 45 degree angle and when we got closer we could see that the car had hit both cars that were parked correctly in the end 2 spots.

Lack of practice during lockdown or simply rubbish drivers?

Indeed - petrol vapours are far more dangerous that petrol. After all, it's why cars can do 400+ miles on one 50L tank of it. 14.7:1 air to fuel.

Not so dangerous as ether vapour: some years back a bottle of ether was knocked over at one end of the lab, a few seconds later a big flash- back from a lit bunsen burner a good 10 yards away. (No injuries, thanks to prompt response with CO2 extinguishers)

I've always wondered about those BOC small trucks loaded up with gas bottles for labs and industrial sites (one that gets a delivery about twice a month behind my flat block). Hopefully they are VERY careful drivers! I wouldn't want to be anywhere near one of them if it had an accident.

I watched in amazement yesterday as a child in passenger seat or rather wasn`t, hanging out the window trying to touch parked cars as they drove past,

I was at a vintage car event some time ago. A child was running its fingers along the radiators of the parked cars. I pointed out to its mother that some of the cars had just been run, they were radiators not radiator grilles, could be hot and the child may get burnt. The mother told the brat to find a stick if it wanted to do that.

When I used to be on the roads a lot, I was in a Vauxhall vivaro van, I think driving in Nottingham, i pulled up to the lights and looked down into the car next to me, the person was tucking into his breakfast, he had a plate of food on his lap and a knife and fork in his hands, the lights changed and off he went, I’ve heard of fast food but that was just ridiculous…
