Rusting on Mondeo Mk3 Hatch - J1mbo
Hi, my 51 Hatchback has a small area of rust around the near side drainage hole. An area the size of my small finger nail has flaked away (still have it) with surface rust underneath.

I have taken it to my local dealer who says its not covered under the 12 year warranty but would be under the 1 year paint warranty (car 19 months old). He has taken some photo's and will send the case to Ford to see if they will cover it.

Any comments? Anyone else had this problem?

Friend of mine has just had Ford agree to sort out rust on his R reg Escort as it is perforation, so your dealer is would appear to be wrong saying it's not covered.

Sure, if the car is 19 months old it is not covered by the 12 month maufacturers warranty. But, you may have the extended 2 years dealer warranty that comes with the Mondeo.

Further to this Mondeos and all other cars are normally coverd by a 6 year bodywork and corrosion warranty. If you can prove the rust is from perforation and not through a bump of any kind Ford can't really say no.

However If you my article, you'll find out just what Ford are capable of telling you. They aren't very good at owning up to faults.

TDci'd - my parents' Focus had a very minor problem with the ignition warning light on the dash coming on. After two attempts to fix it, Ford replaced the whole alternator. So I think it very much depends on the attitude of the dealer you are with.

That said, unless the corrosion is due to an accident, I feel that J1mbo has been treated badly and must complain.

The anti-corrosion warranties are very specific, and usually only cover perforation - i.e.,. rust that goes through the bodywork and starts from the inside (in other words, hasn't been caused because the paint is chipped off).

In this case, I think there is a very good case for a repair. Apart from anything, Ford should be interested as to why a modern car is rusting at less than two years old - this is virtually unheard of. In any case, your contract is with the dealer and there is no way that this is of satisfactory quality, so if the worst comes to the worst, I would say you have a very strong claim for the small claims court.

Hi, thanks for all the replies. I brought the car used from a local independant. If I take it to them I reckon they would just cover it up with touch up paint. I went to my local Ford Dealership thinging I would get a better repair under the warranty.

As for the 2 year warranty, my dealer told me because the first service was not done by ford it void. I since queried this with ford and they say its not true.

They have taken some digi photo's and they are sending it off to Ford. If they say no I'm not sure what to do next. I shall keep you all informed.

P.S I am a member of the RAC, might see if they can do an independant report on it.

1. "Paint" and "Sheet Metal" (whatever they mean by that) are specifically excluded from Ford's extended 2nd & 3rd year warranty.

2. For your extended 2nd & 3rd year warranty to be valid, you are required to have your car serviced by an authorised Ford Dealer within +/- 1000 miles or one month of each scheduled service.

I've taken the above statements from the terms and conditions on Ford's web site, so I would be interested to know who at Ford says you don't have to have the servicing done by a Ford Dealer.

The implication is that you will only be entitled to compensation if you can claim under the "perforation" section of the original 6-year anti-perforation warranty.

I have spoken to Ford Protect Customer Service (and again just confirmed it) that you can have the FIRST service done by a garage as long as genuine parts are used. For the 2nd and 3rd year you would need the 2nd and 3rd year service done by a dealer. This is in line with some European law.

The 2nd and 3rd year are NOT a manufactors warranty but a dealer backed one.

Thanks for your comments.

Cheers.
