Hi outkast, brilliant site this isn't it? I could talk about cars until the cows come home. Especially ones I've owned, liked & know a bit about! I was on dial up until my girlfriend kept reminding me how much I was wasting & to get on a monthly scheme. She's regretting it now...!
Anyway, can't suggest anything else 4 the AC. The garage I know: not sure if he'd willingly give free info out on the dog &, but if you made a trip to Mchstr, he'd sort ANY problems out for you without charging you an arm & a leg.
When you come to replace the brake pads, I'd recommend Ferodos.
Almost tireless.

I traded my 12v in against an E39 5 series - believe me YOU have got the better car.
Speak to U later.....................

the ac used to work but not well it hasnt been recharged for a couple of years.
This could be the problem. I recall reading in another thread here somewhere that if the a/c gas is low then it won't work - sort of a last resort protection for the compressor.
I'm guessing here, but I suspect you've probably got the old refrigerant, R12, in the system. If you have, then a regas is out of the question, as it's no longer available. See:-

Hopefully our resident air con specialist, Dave N, will be along shortly to advise though.

Thanks ive got it booked in later this week so i'll mention that,it might save a few quid

Does the light on the A/C switch come on? When mine failed to due to low pressure, the absence of the light showed the fault.

Hi,
yes the light comes on,ive been into the the fan connections with a multimeter and there are 12v there all the time, but if i bell to earth there apears to be no connection on the other pin.
If I connect the fan to the battery direct it turns.
so im at a loss.

Dont be fooled by the no earth. Its possible the earth is the switched line. ie a relay pulls it to earth to complete the circuit

If my memory serves me correctly, these have an engine driven fan, and an auxiliary for the a/c. The a/c fan will only come on when the high side pressure reaches 17.5 bar. If it's empty of gas then nothing will work, if it's low on gas then it will never get to 17.5 bar, if it's not terribly warm it won't work unless the engine fan coupling is knackered (which most are).
It may well be that the relay is switched to earth, which is why you're getting nothing working.
I'm interested to know why you want the fan to work. Does the a/c work, but not very well and you think the fan is at fault. Or are you just curious?
|
a bit of both realy but i assumed that if the fan was running it would keep the gas cooler which in turn would cool the cabin more/quicker.
also your memory is spot on.
by the way when i switch on the a/c the pump runs but sounds rough,i've been told it needs a regas with oil, does this make sense to you or am i being led up the garden path?
Thanks to all of you for your help.

The temperature of the a/c isn't really related to the operation of the aux fan as such. As long as the pressures remain in a certain range, then the a/c will deliver. I would imagine your system has a leak, and a rough sounding compressor doesn't sound good. You really need to get the pressures taken and post them here. Adding oil to a knackered or noisy (amounts to the same thing) compressor won't make any difference, as oil can't repair worn bearings/pistons/bores or swash plates in the compressor. Ha, you can try one of the miracles in a can that promises to rebuild an engine for you just by pouring it in the filler cap. But as we all know, they're all can and no miracle. Seriously though, don't try it in a compressor!

Cheers Dave N im going to leave it well alone, the refridgerant would need changing, that means an adaptor kit etc.so the pounds keep adding up.
Thanks for your advice, and everyone else.

Hi outkast,
How's the car progressing?
What do you get to the gallon by the way? Got about20 around town out of mine & up to 28 on a run....
|
Hi,
The cars going ok,but im getting better milage than you did, must be the 24v (or i dont have as heavier foot as you do!!!)
I had a run to London and back a few weeks ago(over 550 miles) and i got 33.4mpg according to the trip computer,it seems about right just over a tank full. The average must have been messed up by my plod round the M25 and Enfield so it might have got a bit more.my speed was in the region of 80/90 mph on the motorways/duels.
Round town im getting about 25mpg which isnt bad for stop/start driving.
Hows the BMW (i think thats what you have?)I nearly got a 730 but went for the GSI instead,i think i made the right choice?
Still off on holls next week ill have to grt into an internet cafe and keep up with events on this site!!!
See ya later.

Hi outkast,
That's brill mileage you're getting I reckon for a big 3 Litre motor! Was a bit heavy footed I suppose, but found the acceleration addictive really.
Got rid of the Gsi in Mar' 2002 - Engine & mechanicals were ok but bodywork & substructure was getting tired. Replaced it with a '98 BMW 528i SE Auto. Wonderful engine & 'box, but hated too many things about it. MPG (20 on a good day), horrible seats (after the Gsi's Recarros), poor lights, poor steering compared too the Gsi. Just never took to it really.
Traded it in (& lost a fortune) against a 6mnth old Laguna 1.9 dci in Mar' this yr. Apart from outright performance & hush, I think the Renault is superior to the BMW in virtually every department! Never tire of driving it. Still miss the Carlton though...
So I reckon you've done the right thing.
Have a good hol & speak to you soon....
