I have a vauxhall astra(1999) and have just switched the radio/cassette player for the radio/cd player. After entering the code the radio has now gone into safe mode! Can this be disengaged?

Yep, providing you have the correct code and you haven\'t entered the incorrect code more than 10 times. If you haven\'t got the correct code, a main Vaux dealer should be able to help prviding you cross their palms with silver. You\'ll need proof of ownership though.

I assume it's a standard Vx unit which you're atempting to fit. If so these require an increased waiting period (with the set switched on) after each incorrect attempt to enter the code, increasing to 640 minutes (!) after the ninth try according to my Vx radio manual. If the code is entered wrongly the 10th time the radio goes into 'SAFE' mode and is locked out - even the correct code won't unlock it at that stage. You'll have to talk to a Vx dealer or a radio specialist to get it sorted.

It sounds like your unit is at that stage. Do I assume you got it s/h? Sounds like it's been wecked by the previous 'owner' and passed on!

It may not be all lost.

Try :turning the unit off, then ignition on, then hold AS down (keep holding it) & then turn the unit on..wait until 4 dashes appear..then enter the code.

Of course if the code is duff then it will need a reset..should cost about £15 from an indepedent radio specialist.

Or as suggested above get all your car codes from your friendly Vx dealer. Mine charged about a tenner. However this will only work for you if the radio is the original factory fit.

I have a 2000 Vauxhall Astra and after problems with it the battery was disconnected and now I have no code for the radio. It is a VDO CDR500. Can anyone advise me how to get the code and what information I need to provide in order to get the code? The radio control panel comes off and the codes on it are PA6-GF15 and GM13107918. There are a lot of sites around charging different amounts for codes so I would like to be sure.

All you need is proof of ownership and reg/chassis number (take V5 with you and probably a utility bill / passport) to any Vauxhall dealer who will sell you a new Pass Card with the code on it for about £30. This assumes radio is the original one in the car. Otherwise you are over to using someone like this: http://www.dndservices.co.uk/ They will probably want serial number that's on the radio chassis and only visible once radio is removed from dash.
