I have a 1.8 litre japanese hatchback - just under 3 years old.
Direct Line, my current insurer, have quoted £499 with 8 years no claims discount. Asking for a new customer quote on their web site yields £445! Would have expected the same quote really, as the "actuarial risk" is the same.
Anyway, going through a dozen companies - Norwich Union (Aviva), Lloyds TSB, HSBC, Axa et al yields premiums ranging from £440 to a scary £790 (Eagle Star Direct)!.
E-Sure are quoting £285. Yes £285. Nearly £200 less than the next best quote. And over £500 cheaper than Eagle Star.
Guess who I am going with! ;o)
How E-Sure can price so cheaply I have no idea, but I have checked my inputs to verify and they are all correct.
Welcome to cheap insurance!
No connection to e-Sure blah blah blah, except as a policyholder shortly.
I note from their website they don't cover celebrities and the like. Hence how can Michael Winner claim to be insured by them when they esplicitly exclude people in that line of employment?
Try answering YES to the clause regarding "performer or presenter in films, TV, radio, music or other performing arts" and a quote is declined.

I've just had a similar experience with my normal insurance quoting me over £500 but E-sure was only £234. So E-sure it is!

Companies like E.Sure and More Than 'cherry pick' in order to keep their premiums lower for the people they do insure. If you have a dodgy record of any sort they either won't insure you or the premium will be uncompetitive.

Well, MORE TH>N wanted MORE TH>N £500!

The reason you got a different quote is because you get a 5% discount if you sign up on-line. If you phone DL and mention the price difference, chances are they'll honour the on-line price. They did for me recently.
|
Aye, that'd be handy - he could pay only £445 instead of £285!
|
|
The maths doesn't add up DD unless you meant a 10% discount.
Many insurers like Tesco and (the same company) Direct Line give 5% off for online transactions, but 5% of £499 is about £25 off not the £54 off that we see here.

Sean,
I'm asuming the quote Clariman was given also included the legal protection cover and protected no claims bonus charge; both of which are exluded from the 5% discount. The discount only applies to the cost of the actual insurance policy without the bolt on extras.

I too can confirm that e-sure is good value, and I have 2 cars insured with them now. To top it, my renewal this year for the 1st car has come our cheaper than the bargain price it was last year!
One word of caution: they do not always include 3rd party cover for driving cars other than your named car.
|
Yes, I found e sure cheaper than my current insurer, but only about £50 or so.
My own insurer (NIG) organised through Peter Goord in Plymouth (01752 361888) allow unlimited NCD protection and the broker throws in free legal cover - WOW that was useful a couple of years ago!
I've got one fault accident in 2001 and a SP30 in 1999 full NCD and live in Cornwall. Xantia 2.0 16v (130 bhp) £333 fully comp. (I'm 36).

How did you get a quote fom esure, Hugo?.......I tried yesterday but my wife's SP30 earlier this year prevented me from getting a quote - a message came up saying that due to the conviction they would not insure me/us.

I suspect that my SP 30 being a few years old may have helped.
Anyway I suggest you try Peter Goord - Phone number in my last post - Ring him on Monday.

My wifes Polo was £193 TPFT with no claims cover. But the car is 1985 vintage how do they manage to charge so much for TPFT when your 3 year old is only £285 (I assume its fully comp)?

Bill,
Do you know it's £110 DEARER to go for TPF&T on my Golf than Comp?
Apparently the low-lifes who steal cars usually set fire to them, so Ins Cos have to pay out loads whichever cover you have.,
Also they reckon the biggest risk is who they run over, so you don't gain much from having an older car, which won't have all the modern locks, alarms, immobilisers etc.
I was playing on the Tesco Ins website and you can add or remove options and see price differences.
I think you'll be as surprised as I was.
Cheers mate.

Recently got the renewal from DirectLine 198 quid for fully comp, 1990 MX5, garaged, rural postcode, unlimited miles, unmodded, ancient git with 3 points driving and 6 years NCB.
Tried www.confused.com and lowest was 175. Noticed a few names missing and tried MoreThan - 126 quid - Bargain and that includes their 'protected for life' NCB at zero cost.
There are no hard and fast rules, differemt companies, cars, addresses, vehicles, jobs, phase of the moon all affect the premium - all you can do is search the web and use the phone each and every year.
|
Make sure you protect your no claims. e-sure were £100 less for me with 8 years no claims. I had a claim last year - no fault accident, but hit and run so I had to claim. e-sure only take account of a max of 5 years no claims - one claim knocks this back to 3 years - less than the 4 years you need to be an e-sure customer - result insurance renewal premium of £800!! I've gone back to Frizell who will cover me for £380 with the three years(less than esure when I had 8 years no claims).
|
Since I got my own insurance about 6 years ago, Ive never stayed with the same company for 2 years running. I found that one insurer was always considerably cheaper than all the rest. I shop around each time, and have remained claim free, so cant explain why!
