Not an annoyance but an observation. Has anyone else noticed how in modern car adverts, the registration number of the car is frequently composed of numbers and letters that can be flipped horizontally and appear the same (e.g. V, W, X, Y, U, 0, 8).
I presume this is so the film can be flipped without looking wierd and can therefore be shown in countries where the cars are LHD and where they are RHD.

All adverts that portray the male as stupid/agressive etc etc. This is such a bore. It is as if the advertising companies know that if they put the shoe on the other foot, then they will be deluged with criticism about being sexist. Us blokes are supposed to be able to take it. Hence the truly moronic "don't you want me baby" Punto advert (and all other Punto adverts) plus others too numerous to mention.
How about some ads showing the fairer sex trying to reverse into a parking space?
My all time least favourite car ad has to be that prat in the Citroen driving down the mountain and making screeching noises with his mouth. Something about his face made me want to punch it and I almost would refuse to buy a Citroen on principle as a result.

I know that it is Friday and my brain has gone into premature meltdown, but I have heard this before but still can\'t see how this can change the steering wheel form right to left.
I hate the Megane advert\'s song - shaking that rear end
|
The Megane song by Groove Armada and remixed by Fatboy Slim. Groove Armada's "If everybody looked the same" is used in a Mercedes ad. Personally I've always liked it!

Zoom zoom.
Need I say more?
Oh alright then I will.
Why are Volvo shelling out big time for a campaign for the new XC90 when you can't get one for more than 12 months?
|
Quite right, gormless couple in a Golf with a Beetle body on it!
You can reverse the picture to make the steering wheel change sides just by looking at it in a mirror or by looking thru the negative from the 'wrong' side, and thus by printing it with the negative face up instead of down
|
"You can reverse the picture to make the steering wheel change sides just by looking at it in a mirror or by looking thru the negative from the 'wrong' side, and thus by printing it with the negative face up instead of down"
Correct A.S.
C.M. if you take an image of a car on your computer and 'flip' it left to right (using image software) you see the effect. It becomes a left hand drive, only the numberplate would give it away. So the same can be done with ads and posters and therefore save on photoshoot costs.
Of course printing a transparency in a motoring book in the 'flipped' manner would cause a left hand drive to become a right hand drive...but only an idiot would do that! Ahem.

Brill,
Are you still driving those outrageous cars or has that particular perk dried up ?

More looking than touching these days, currently finishing off the 'Bentley R-Type Continental Sports Saloon', quite an elegant barge.

Maybe for the jokes page?
A Mexican bandit in Arizona is caught by the Sheriff - asks 'Where is the money'
Bandit replies 'No se nada'
Sheriff puts a gun to his head and tells the Spanish speaking Deputy 'Tell him if he dont tell where the money is I 'll blow his head off'.
On hearing the translation, the Bandit says ' Ya me acuerdo.Tienen que cominar tres cuadardos hasta ese gran arbol. Debajo del arbol, alli esta el dinero'
Sheriff 'Yeah? Well?'
Deputy 'He says he wants to die like a man'

Tried it on HJ's Leon and hey presto...
Sorry for being so dumb this Friday afternoon!

Car adverts that annoy, where shall I start:
Those for the Vectra when it was revamped, they were horrendous. The stupid Stilo advert where everyone is opening and shutting all the windows etc, and the advert where the 4x4 driver is deliberately driving over roadworks and into water, hardly off roading is it, although more that most Suzuki Jimny's can cope with - useless piles of carp.
I find that if an advert really annoys me I deliberately avoid the products.
I shall get off my soapbox now.
Paul.
|
I would honestly like to say that if an advert annoyed me I would avoid the product but to be honest its in one ear and out the other, even the advert I hate which I mention above I can not recall what car it is advertising. They pay millions for this stuff and its... pointless.
|
Ok, my choice for crappiest car related adds of the moment:
1st Place
goes to to that little domed roofed thing where the little girl waves her wand and suddenly its a hatchback, then a cabriolet, then a saloon etc. Urrrggghhhh!
2nd Place
Michael 'calm dowwwwn dear - its a commercial!' winner and the 'hi mum' woman from e-sure
|
What about the excutiating VW ads where the guy thinks they might spot the price "mistake"?
|
The best/worst part about it is £800 off a 20 grand motor doesn't make me want to jump and and down with glee anyway.
|
|
|
|
Because it raises the brand image.
|
Saw the new Signum ad tonight - very low key, maybe they've learnt something from the Vectra ad.
The (I think) E-class ad tonight was a work of art...brilliant.
|
The NU 'Quote me Happy' ad annoys me, notably the bit where she manages to get a quote by giving no details about the car whatsoever beyond the fact 'It's a hatchback'.
It could be a Ford Focus RS or a Perudua Nippa for all they know. Are they allowed to show such a thing on the advert if they cant do it? Can I demand a quote based on the fact my car is merely a 'hatchback'? ;)
|
the one that really gets up my nose is the "esure" advert where it says "there is only one way to make sure who is a good driver...... check their no claims discount" aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhh, thats is so stupid. how many of us had "little bumps" after which we wisely opted not to claim it from insurance to save our premium going throught the roof???? i think the ad should say "there is only one way to make sure who is a fantastic insurance customer who we will be sure will not claim from us for years to come and we can continue to rip of for many happy years to come.....". this advert really makes me boil.....
|
ZOOM.... ZOOM... ZOOM.
Ugh, pass the sick bag.
|
Micra. All of them, especially the 'do you speak Micra' rubbish -but at least they've chosen to patronise women not men - interesting idea!
|
How about the Kia ads ?
Buy one of our cars and leave it at home.Walk the kids to school or use a bicycle to go to work.
OR
The old ad for the Nissan Almera.
"The car they don't want you to drive"
said car then gets pushed over a cliff.
To think that some oiks get loads of dosh for dreaming up this rubbish !
|
I like the new Picasso ad, where the robots are caught doing a 'Picasso sculpture' on the body parts. In the time it takes for the Hitler of a foreman to get his boss they've rebuilt the car as it should be.
As soon as their backs are turned the robots then laugh at the foreman.
H
|
So thats why you get a lot of gremlins in the electrics on french cars!!
Its not the design or the execution, but the robots fault:)
|
Yea, my list would include:.....!
1. Fiat \'dont you want me wooo wooo wooo!\' Punto advert
2. Annoying couple from direct line advert - no wonder their smug though - the repair people didnt realise it was a golf and put beetle panels on instead!
3. Ford Focus \'this is a mans world\' - the one where that woman drives upto the lighthouse and flashes the ship when the lighthouse broke down.
4. Those Vectra adverts - THEY WERE TERRIBLE - the ones with the american guy on them
5. Clio - what is \'va va vooom?\' - with that stupid bloke on it going through things which werent \'va va voom\' - i.e. the clio
6. MG Rover - \'we will beat any deal because were soo desperate to shift the cars\'
7. Toyota Avensis - the one where the guy offers all of the \'office executives\' a lift from the gym and they say \'what was it you said you do?\', he replies \'i didnt\'....VERY annoying
and i think thats about it
The best car advert though is:
Honda - isnt it nice when things just work? - a touch of class
|
Shame that it (the Honda ad) is a direct rip-off (alledgedly) of a film shot about 5 years ago.
|
that'll be the daewoo! need i say more!
|
Amazing that no-one has mentioned the Vauxhall advert with Griff Rhys-Jones! (or did I miss it)
Still have fond memories of the Fiat robots and opera ad., but not the cars.
|
Those Griff Rhys-Jones ads were nauseating. btw, \"that bloke\" on the Clio adverts (\"va-va-voom\") is Thierry Henry, Arsenal and France striker.
|
Car ad's are truely wasted on me - I might take notice of the music, but never remember what model of car it's pushing.
When I do want to know about cars I go and ask the people who
know, rather than being influenced by what to wear, what to hum along to, or some smart alec put downs.
Although I knew about Theirry Henry and think he looks rather nice ;) - celebrity endorsement counts for nowt either!
They're wasting their money really aren't they?
|
And do they seriously expect us to believe that a guy earning £50,000 a week drives a Renault Clio??
|
Renault's slogan 'Createur d'automobiles'
....I think most people have a pretty good idea that Renault build cars.
|
'I was headhunted again last week'
'Well I've definitely been earmarked for the board' [sprays]
'I've quadrupled my turnover in the last 3 years'
'Anyone want a lift'?
'What did you say you did again'?
'Taxi driver'
The new Toyota Avensis. You'll never guess who was in the back last week.
|
Plenty of bad ones.
I'm glad the AA couple where the woman didn't shop around but went straight to the AA aren't on anymore. If I had another half who did that I'd be livid as the AA were at least double the price of the best for me.
As a widescreen purist and hater of stretchyvision, the Focus ad where she declines the proposal by writing no in tyre prints in the sand. Were they trying to make the Focus longer and sleeker (similar to how the original Allegro sketches compared to the final car) or a balls up by the ad men who forgot all ads have to be in widescreen?
Is the new 307 ad saying everyone will want to trash your car if you buy one, or at least treat you like a BMW driver :)
Those Griff Rhys Jones ads with the Y-fronts destroyed the reputation of the VX220 before it had a chance to establish itself.
Despite the zoom-zoom, I still bought a Mazda. Just don't visit their website with the sound turned on on your PC. Zoom-zoom is bad enough on TV, worse through the MW-esque web version.
|
Is my dyslexia coming to haunt me, but I thought it was 'Greateur' d'automobiles??
All TV ads are rubbish

Mrs Fif pointed out an interesting interpetation of a car ad tonight.
Its the one for the Fiat Stilo where the guy is so used to having powered this and that on the car he expects the office doors to be opened automatically for him..... allegedly.
Anyway madame thought Fiat really meant, "Our customers are so stupid they can't even work out how to open doors."
cue for a post from sean............

It's Créateur d'Automobiles
In French, a créateur is a designer like a fashion designer. The idea is that these are 'designer cars' but to a non-French speaker it just sounds like 'we make cars'. Hence the 'designer cars, not designer prices' line.
Renault marketing is very badly translated. Anyone know what lateral airbags are? In English, we call them side airbags; the French call them airbags latéraux.
Likewise, a Clio brochure boasted about the special BVM manual gearbox. BVM is actually short for boîte à vitesses manuelle or erm, manual gearbox.
|
"lateral airbags"
But does that not prove the Case, that French is a far more elegant language. I like the term lateral airbags, guess the makers that thought that the average punter couldn't figure out what it meant or heaven forbid its an Americanism.
|
French can be quite elegant, although no one apart from the government calls airbags coussins gonflables de sécurité.
Thing is, that term was probably well established in English before Renault's translators got their hands on it and decided to make up a new one.
That just seems sloppy to me; perhaps in this case it works fine but a lot of the time that approach just makes garbage.
|
Norwich Union and the Renualt Meganne adverts - both just plain annoying!
|

how about this for French language elegance...
'r' in French is pronounced 'errrrrr' (roll your rs) so the free papers here are now full of ads for voitures with 'rbags'!

Actually they started using that tag line after Jean Paul Gaultier was involved in the design of the current range.
