Polestar 2 - EV Carbon Footprint - mcb100

Interesting figures published by Volvo regarding the footprint of a Polestar 2 vs an XC40.

To produce the cars, it's 14 tonnes of Co2 for an ICE car, against 24 tones for the Polestar 2.

To produce the fuel to power the XC40 will account for 41 tonnes, whilst using a Global mix of generation sources it's 23 tonnes. Solely wind power is 0.4 tonnes.

So the sums are saying that if you're in Europe you're ahead after 80,000Km, using a global mix of power sources it's 100,000Km, and if you're purely on wind power 50,000Km.

It says producing the fuel to power the XC40 accounts for 41 tonnes of CO2, but there's no figure included for the amount of CO2 produced by burning the fuel in the engine, which would obviously be a lot. The Polestar 2 would not emit any CO2 at all while in use apart from in the breath of the driver, passengers and any pets being carried in the car.

The data is here, you may interpret it differently to me.

The link unfortunately doesn't work for me. But anyway - can some expert answer what's probably a stupid question.

Is there any difference to the environment as a whole between producing x tonnes of Co2 all at once, as in manufacturing an EV, then none while the EV is running, and producing x tonnes (same amount) some of it in manufacture and the rest during the life of the ICE vehicle?

The globe might get away with generating more CO2 if some nations weren't chopping down their large forests so fast. We could plant more trees than we do as well.

Would be best to cut CO2 output and plant more trees (ensuring they are the right ones in the right places)

Carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere for decades. Pumping out more, and cutting down trees simply advances the rate of climate change.

Planting trees is a short term expedient - they grow to maturity over ~ 25-200 years, fall or get cut down, release stored CO2 and the cycle starts again.

The obvious solution is to consume much less of the products of CO2 consumption - cars, heating, steak, planes etc etc. The only other variable is the number of people on the planet.
