2005 Ford Fiesta, 1242cc, 3-door, petrol - Radiator Fan Problem - KJH55

Hi, can somebody give me some technical advice please?

I have a 2005 Ford Fiesta, 1242cc, 3-door, petrol. Great car but the radiator fan is not working and the car is overheating especially in traffic jams.

There are three electrical plugs. The plug into the fan is okay, the plug that goes into the engine/ECU is okay.

Plug number 3 is hanging loose. It looks like the unit it plugs into has been damaged. The broken unit has a couple of other wires going into it. I need to order the broken unit but I do not know what its called. Can somebody tell me what part to order please?

Cheers,

Kev

What tests have you done to establish why the fan isn’t working? There is only one engine temperature switch on these that sends info to the engine Ecu, temp gauge on the dash and cooling fan operation.

Hi there - visual tests at this point. ECU plug is inserted, fan-attached plug is inserted. Fan does not operate when car heats up, car just brews up. No damage to wiring.

Third plug (square with rounded corners) is as I said, hanging down therefore not working. Inspection from underneath does not show any plug sockets which require a plug - except the unit I refer to, which is smashed up, probably damaged by road debris.

I imagine this unit provides the electricity which powers the radiator fan. Only other thing I think I may require is new relay. damaged unit should be housed between the battery and the engine, parallel to the lower edge of the radiator.

I do not know the name of the damaged unit, until I know that I cannot order one.

Obviously, I need the car up and running, so information will be gratefully received!

Cheers,

Kev

There are a few variations of cooling fan systems on these . Some are single speed, some are two speed . The hanging connector may have been attached to the slow speed resistor . However, even if it’s missing, it won’t stop the fan working. Power for the fan is supplied from a relay , situated in a small black box next to the battery, or in the cabin fuse box behind the glove box. Are you sure it’s not the fan motor at fault ?

Okay thanks for that, I have just been advised of a 'Charge n Start' specialist in my area, I think I'll take it to them for testing.

Thanks, the diverse answers I've got for this indicates the problem might not be simple.

Have a great/safe Saturday night!

You say the car is overheating, especially in traffic jams. Are you saying it's overheating generally? If so your problem is not limited to the cooling fan not working. You must check to see if the radiator is hot when it overheats. If it's cold then you have a cooling circulation problem, in which case the fan will do nothing to cool the engine even if it was working. The job of the radiator (which is the wrong word for it because it doesn't radiate anything) is a heat exchanger which dissipates engine heat into the air by convection. If the radiator is cold there's no heat to dissipate and so your engine will run hot. As a temporary solution open your windows and set your heater to hot. Put the heater blower on full speed and the engine should cool down as heat is drawn off via the heater. If this is the case you must get this fixed before you end up with a blown cylinder head gasket or worse.

And then there is the question of what, and how much, fluid is in the cooling circuit - and the waterpump. And the thermostat.
