Classic Car - Classic Car Insurance cancelled because of new job - JackOhearts

Hi all.
Just been informed by my (very) long time Classic Car Insurer that because I am (thanks Covid!) now a Taxi Driver (full or part time) that I can no longer have any classic car/bike insurance - for NO reason or expalnation and the policy is being cancelled!! 25 years NCB for Taxi and Private cars & seperate ins policy for taxi as reqd by the local Council.
My car is a Pontiac Fiero LHD - how the ?*&^ would anyone think that could be used a s wheelchair accessable taxi????
This apparently now applies to EVERYONE who drives for a living!
So how many car/tractor/bike owners are going to be without insurance now???

There is more than one classic car insurer. Try a few others, if they all say the same, by all means get back on your high horse!.

What a sad attempt at sarcasm!

What do think I did before posting this? If you feel the need to post crap at least try to fathom the details before your finger starts tapping away and if you have nothing constructive to add then stay quite. No wonder folks stay away from forums when that type of nonsense starts.

I'm sorry if i offended, that wasn't the intention.

But the point still stands that there are many insurance companies who deal with classic cars. Some of these will invariably have different ways of looking at things. I very much doubt there are no taxi drivers who also own a classic car. Same for any other professions who your own insurer would deem unacceptable.

And your original post says nothing about being in touch with any insurers other than your own.

Perhaps your insurer (and others) are withdrawing from that particular market?

However, someone somewhere (at a price) will cover you (and others in the same situation)

My insurance for skydiving has been cancelled following Covid 19 as has our annual travel insurance had the terms and condituions changed.

For foreign travel, we are now effectivly uninsurable as premiums are now in orbit with the space station. We have cancelled our private health insurance as premiums have doubled on renewal this summer. following positive covid tests and in my case a visit to intensive care..

Insurers like to make money, pure and simple. There is actually no obligation for them to insure anyone.

My wife has medical protection insurance as a doctor and her premium has near doubled this year. That is on top of her NHS employers insurance and she does not do private practice.

... If you feel the need to post crap ... [etc]

As an independent onlooker I am trying to judge whether this reply merits any favourable criticism at all. Some people find their handles very easy to fly off. And someone else seems to have decided that the swear-trap no longer makes it necessary to write "cr@p" :-)

In fact I have just realised that my 72 year old taxi driver has insurance for his classic car a ford pop and his classic triumph bonneville.

Must be getting it somewhere...

It's possible that that decision was made by some idiotic computer: have you tried ringing your insurer and stating clearly that the Pontiac wont be used as a taxi?

If they really are obstinate, or in thrall to their computer, I would hope that some other insurer would be more sensible. You could also try asking for advice on a classic car forum.

Surely if your car was insured for 'normal use' then what's the problem with the insurance company. You aren't daft enough to use it for business. This covid has made a lot of people's lives very difficult, my private teaching has gone but there are millions worse off than me.

Perhaps the company has just had a lot of bad experiences with taxi drivers. Eg The syndicate I worked for several years ago had apparently every taxi driver in the West Midlands suffer a bad back at about the same time. Perhaps the OPs company considers the occupation a moral hazard? Insurance companies do move in a mysterious way, like God but a lot less generous. The advice to shop around is very sound. There are specialist brokers for classic cars and this is not an insurmountable problem.

Some professions are regarded, presumably based on claims history, as high risk. Jockeys and stage performers are one example and taxi drivers may well be another. That's life and given the OP is engaged in that profession from now it's going to be the start point.

In practical terms I think others have covered the point. Make it 100% clear that the taxi driving and the classic will not, under any circumstances, cross over. There is a market for exotics/classics for (eg) wedding cars. My daughter and I travelled to her wedding in a VW Combi motor caravan.......

Try through brokers; they have access to stuff you won't find searching on the net. If there is a forum/owners club for your particular classic then see if they have any contacts.

i know someone who became a Police Oficer at a new safer address and they wouldn't let hm continue his warm hatch insurance so he had to cancel it. Premium doubled even after a thorough GoCompare search.

You need to be able to talk to a human at an insurer or broker.

Classic car insurance won’t include any business use and perhaps as a belt and braces, they could endorse the certificate and schedule to specifically exclude taxi work?

I found my insurance went down when I informed them I’d changed jobs from an engineering role to bus driving.
