Ford Fiesta - RE: Ford Fiesta 1.2 petr 2014 engine ticking noise - Lukas Stapleton

Hi,

My engine developed a ticking noise on idle I assume it is tappets but I never dealt with them before just seeing if anyone knows best way to check them and if they done them on a fiesta and know tolerance to check against please?

I am a DIY low experience mechanic.

Thanks

It starts and drives fine oil level correct

They are hydraulic lifters on these , so no mechanical adjustment . If there is a clatter from the top end , you have a problem . Sometimes using an engine flush and renew filter and oil ( correct grade essential on these) can improve the issue .

Surely the 1.2 is the Yamaha designed engine-therefore mechanical tappets not hydraulic! Get yourself a Haynes.Don't think there is one specifically for this MY. but the earlier one is the same engine.

Yes, wrong engine . Buckets and shims .

jc2 is correct. As far as I am aware all Fords from approx 1996 with either the Ford Zetec 1.8 & 2.0 (Mk 1.5 Mondeo, Mk 1 Focus), Ford/Mazda Duratec 1.8 & 2.0 (Mk 2, 3 4 Mondeo, Mk 2 Focus) plus the Yamaha Zetec 1.2, 1.4 & 1.6 used in the Fiesta & Focus (there are probably more than I have recalled) are all solid tappets. the early Ford Zetec (1.6, 1.8 & 2.0) used in the Fiesta, Escort/Orion, Mk 1 Mondeo used Hydraulic tappets.

We had a Mk 1 Focus followed by a Mk 2 Focus (both 1.8 petrol) and I seem to remember that the check/adjust was every 40,000 miles. No idea if ours were ever done (part of service) but I never needed to ask specifically since even though both cars did six figure miles the tappets never made a murmur.

The OP does not say how many miles the car had done but it is important for these modern cars to have regular oil changes with the correct Ford spec lubricant. Its not expensive, the last time I bought 5 litres (2019) it was £16 from Asda.

If I remember correctly there is a Ford tool that enables the shims to be removed and replaced without dismantling the cam assembly but you need a selection of shims at hand should a different thickness be required plus a set of feeler gauges (cheap enough) to check the clearance and a vernier (not so cheap) to measure the shim thickness. Its probably easier to get a Ford specialist who has the shims at hand to do it especially for a DIY'er with no previous experience.

Hi all,

Thank you for you help.

The car has done 53,000 miles had regular oil changes, it is due one now but want to get to bottom of the issue.

For clarity are we saying the engine has mechanical buckets therefore need to be measured and checked?

Is there a way to press down on the buckets with rocker cover off to check which ones could be a fault without dismantling further?

Sure I heard this somewhere thank you

Can’t see the tappets need adjustment at 53k . Remove the cam cover and check for excessive wear on camshaft lobes and buckets .

Fuel injectors can tick sometimes and can sound like a tappet. At idle its normally worst during warm up when extra fuel is being injected. A garage should have the kit to listen, a stethoscope device used and should identify if there is an issue.

But don't go mad and spend money on new injectors. They will carry on for years making a noise causing no other issues.

One question, can you hear the noise whilst driving?

It is worse at idle when driving seems ok cant hear anything?

Could just be injectors but thought petrol engines not suppose to be loud.

Can we attach on forum as cant seem to find button on mobile internet browser?
