Kia Carens 2018 petrol - ACEA A5 v ACEA C2/C3 - compatible? - Mick_T

Morning all, due to being unable to get my car serviced I think I will need to top up the oil as it is looking on the low side (still using car to get to work as NHS worker).

I've been reading up on here and elsewhere, so understand the viscosity ratings and the difference between a 5w-30 and a 10w-40.

However I'm confused about ACEA ratings. My car requires 5w-30 ACEA A5 oil. I have some oil at home (Gulf Formula CX) which states ACEA C2/C3. It is 5w-30 so same viscosity grade but unsure if I can use this.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

I think you will find that the c2/c3 ratings is a low ash oil for diesels with a dpf. As a small quantity top up, I doubt if it will do any harm.

I work as a workshop controller at a Kia dealership.... we use 5/30 C3 grade oil to service ALL Kia models , as it reaches the standards required by the modern diesels , and exceeds that required by older diesels and all petrol models.

Apologies for taking this thread off of topic but Targen are you seeing many reliability issues with the DCT automatic and do they drive as well as a proper TC auto ? Thanks.

Honest answer.... some issues , but a lot of owner-reported faults stem from their unfamiliarity with the DCT concept...they are used to torque-convertor equipped autos , not what is essentially a manual gearbox with an auto-shift. Personally I find the DCT box slow to select gears , so when driven with "spirit" it can feel sluggish..... but then I prefer the feel of manuals anyway. Kia are continually developing the DCT software , if any owner feels something isnt right they should contact their main dealer (when they can!!) , there are several upgrades available to download. There is nothing like "real world" public testing of a system to find its bugs... every part of the DCtTsystem carries the 7 year / 100 000 mile warranty.

Hi Targen, thank you for taking the time to reply. I have driven a few DSG equipped cars and never found them as good to drive as a "proper" TC auto and also there are the numerous well known reports of failures. A colleague has Ford Focus with the Powershift DCT which failed just out of warranty so I was disappointed to see that Kia/Hyundai have gone down this route. Though as you say they are covered under warranty.

All manufacturers have had to move away from "slushbox" automatics , in an effort to bring down CO2 emissions across their ranges...the penalties applied for selling "polluting" vehicles are heavy to say the least.

I don't think it is correct to say slush boxes are a dying breed..
Certainly Hyundai / Kia now seem to now favour DCT and have just switched to automated manual for the i10 / Picanto (which if you watch the YouTube video about it actually says it does jerk when changing gear and has to be driven a special way to get a decent gear change, so not a good advert.)
BUT....Ford seem to be going back to Torque Converter (slushbox) after their disastrous and costly outing with Powershift automated manuals.
Citroen / Peugeot / PSA group (so presumably now including Vauxhall) have switched to a slushbox 6 and 8 speed (denoted EAT boxes) after their less than reliable outing with what they termed an EGS box which I believe was an automated manual type of thing.

I know for fact the EAT8 box in the Citreon C5 Aircross gives good MPG as my uncle has got one, and it does far more than my Kia venga with a really old 4 speed slushbox.

New slush boxes are actually returning good mpg it seems and as technology is proven for many years now, I guess some manufacturers are just not wanting to have huge warranty payouts.

That's not to say that DCT / automated manual / CVT doesn't have its place in the auto world but Ford and PSA being mainstream makers, I thought I'd just point out that not ALL are dumping slush boxes (and Mazda I believe have always been and still are slush boxes)

Not true.

In February we had a Volvo XC40 on a 2 day test which used an 8 speed Geartronic box which is a torque converter auto. It was excellent, without doubt the best auto I have ever driven and compared to the poor 7 speed and 6 speed DSG boxes I have driven in the past (not by choice) there is absolutely no comparison.

Unfortunately in the XC40 twin engine Volvo have fitted a 7 speed DSG type box and the 2 reports I have read say its very jerky and unresponsive. Considering that the geartronic box was the exact opposite of that you do woonder why.
