Jeep Grand Cherokee - car on ebay- MOT history shows mileage going DOWN? - bananastand

About to bid on a car on ebay so checked the MOT history. Last test was October 2019 at 114,000 miles. October 2018 was 160,000 miles! 2017 was 144,000, 2016 was 126,000. HERRO?

It also dropped by 12,000 miles from 2013 to 2014??

You would think that the government system would prevent a mileage shrinking? Or did they drive round the world in reverse gear?

Can I post a link to the gov.uk listing? (is it allowed)

or is there a rational explanation???

"Quote" Caveat Emptor "Unquote"

You are surely aware that ebay buyers protection does not cover cars.

Fat fingered mileage once.. but several times???

I fit is something you really really want and you get it cheap enough?

And looking at the auctions on ebay

one injector fault or one big fault will mean your money is gone...

“ is there a rational explanation???”

Yes, the seller is a crooked bam.

There are some valid reasons for mileages shrinking, but I guess most will probably be dodgy. These days, when anyone in the know can look up 15 years of history, shady sellers may be pushing their luck. Misrecording by the MoT tester is one possibility, but after one of those, numbers should revert to trend. Perhaps the actual figure is 174K, which would look genuine.

Not sure how a 'government system might prevent' this happening ??

you would simply think that the system would refuse an entry with the message "new figure cannot be less than old figure" - but yes I know, that would be too obvious

Wouldn’t allow for a speedo change which is fairly common.

If you’re looking at cheap older SUV’s like this Jeep then they unfortunately attract the wrong sort of dealer and often owner. I wouldn’t touch one on a tight budget, even vs a good one will almost certainly be a total money pit.

It might be that the odometers are as unreliable as the rest of the vehicle apparently is from what i read, new ones probably cost more the vehicle is worth, used odos are being fitted?

It's pretty pointless clocking cars and leaving the evidence for all to see by having the car MOT'd with less miles than last time, only a lunatic would try such a thing unless the typical buyers are even dafter and never look at MOT history, more sensible would be to clock the car annually just before MOT, but if the vehicle is serviced by a proper garage the discrepencies will still show up.

Clocking has to be done better than this to be worth doing, or are buyers really so gullible.

Considering some of teh stories read here.. and the stories from non motoring acquaintances- most people buying a car have no clue about anything .
