That Volvo only charge half as much to replace a broken EGR compared to VW for a similar sized car rather shows why owning older VAGs are a rip-off, in my view.

Depends where the EGR is. On some vehicles its on top of the engine and can be off and changed in half an hour.

In their wisdom VAG decided the best place for the EGR on the 1.6tdi was at the back of the engine where it can't be reached. Changing it takes hours.

Perhaps it depends upon how bad the acident/damage is - if bits of your car are all over the road, etc, then the scene needs a professional firm, not a jack of all trades.

As HJ said, I seriously doubt if a breakdown operative would want to hang around whilst the scene is firstly made safe, then pick up all the bits and pop them in his van. Not so bad if its just a bump and there no/little debris to clear away.

Like daveyjp, I was involved in an RTC where I rear-ended the car in front at a roundabout and my front bumper caught on their towbar. The AA attended, separated the two cars, and then recovered my car to a local garage (once separated the other party was able to drive away but I had a hole in my radiator). The AA treated it a routine breakdown for me and nobody claimed on the insurance (other party was in a 300,000 mile VW Passat estate with plenty of battle scars already).

When I was the victim of a rear end shunt I called the AA and the Police. The Police decided that my car was unfit to continue the journey, so the AA Relay service transported it to my home.

Shortly afterwards the AA tried to bill me for the recovery. I sent their bill to my insurers and heard no more, so presumably it formed part of their claim against the guilty party's insurers.

The Police successfully prosecuted the brain dead youth who shunted me with careless driving.

Re; Well oiled?

If you need the service manager to sign a statement saying the service has been carried out, you don't need a dipstick, you need a new garage. Otherwise, you need to check the oil and air filters as HJ says. You might also be able to peer, or stick a pinky into the oil filler neck and see what condition the oil is in.

You do not have to replace a flywheel if the starter gear is damaged. A new one can be fitted.
