Hi all,
My rs2000 escort makes this ticking/rattling sound for a few minutes when started for the first time in the morning.
If I switch the car off then start it again straight after it normally goes away. I dont understand this.
Does anyone know what it could be and how to sort it?
It's been going on for over a year and does not affect anything apart from being noisy.
MkV Rs2000, '92, 122k. Regular oil changes.
Best Regards,
Chris

Sounds like a lazy hydraulic valve lifter (tappet). You could try an engine oil flush and new oil to see if it will cure it.

Yea 've tried that a couple of times...
Anyone got any other suggested fixes other then taking the head off and, I presume, simply replacing the duff lifter?
Cheers
Chris

Are you using genuine Ford parts for the oil changes? Concern has been expressed in the past about even quality parts not being exactly to spec. I seem to think it was something along the lines of oil filters that don't contain one way valves that stop the oil draining back to the sump.

I assume it is a regular tick, is so use a long screw driver and place it on and around the engine and com cover to trace the source of the tick. You say Tick/Rattle they may not be related I have come across the source of a cold rattle as being a cracked weld on the heat sheild of the cat. Good Luck Peter

Well its weird..its very regular.
it almost sounds like its coming from the injection system.
there is a normal quiet tick which is supposed to be there but this one is louder and goes away...
Its deffo mechanical...not like a rubbing sound for instance.
