I found this old video, made with the old traditional type voiceover of BMC goes testing foot on the floor on the autobahn to find out if their engine bearings will last 20,000 miles!

Note the horrible handling and the lack of rear axle damping!

But even then I'd think a sustained high speed autobahn test was pretty much the opposite of severe service, bearing in mind that, unlike now, they'd be using decently thick oil.

So even then, marketing was pretty much the opposite of the truth..

Heinkel Kabine at the rest stop about 2.36 in. My first (40 quid) car.

I don't want to know what they are worth now.

I don't want to take one on an autobahn either.

Hah, that's excellent.

I'd rather have been in one of those VW Beetles, which were designed to go flat out.A great film. The Opels look so much more modern with the wrap round windscreens.

80 mph in one of those cars must have been scary. My father had a later 1961,1498cc Farina Morris Oxford . B series engine, 3 main bearings. The handbook cautioned against running at constant "high" speed.

When the Mini Marcos had a second crack at Le Man's the improved aerodynamics enabled over revving and the A series engine failed .

The works Minis competing in saloon races in the 1960s had modified engines, I believe, I saw them at Oulton Park spinning both front wheels, lots of tyre smoke, while passing Ford Galaxies at Lodge corner. But then, race engines were probably rebuilt frequently.

I used to overrev my 997 cooper daily on the way to work - it used to burn a pint of Duckhams 20-50 a week!

I once looked at a Mini Marcos at 1400 quid, for sale in the next street,

and I said I'd "think about it"

Oh yeh?

WHAT WITH?

It was interesting to see the war damage on the large buildings near the end of the film.

When did people stop talking like that?
