I'd rather have been in one of those VW Beetles, which were designed to go flat out.A great film. The Opels look so much more modern with the wrap round windscreens.
80 mph in one of those cars must have been scary. My father had a later 1961,1498cc Farina Morris Oxford . B series engine, 3 main bearings. The handbook cautioned against running at constant "high" speed.
When the Mini Marcos had a second crack at Le Man's the improved aerodynamics enabled over revving and the A series engine failed .
The works Minis competing in saloon races in the 1960s had modified engines, I believe, I saw them at Oulton Park spinning both front wheels, lots of tyre smoke, while passing Ford Galaxies at Lodge corner. But then, race engines were probably rebuilt frequently.
