Sadly these days, the financial repercussions of dismissing the plank outright, though anyone with common sense would agree with you, would be a mere deposit on the costs incurred through this episode as such a result too severe because the incident would probably not be classed as gross misconduct, he'd quite likely succeed in claiming insufficient training...he might even get that final scratched on appeal.

Trust me i've seen all sorts in recent years that would make your hair stand on end, with companies terrified to use any real discipline on complete incompetents, honestly you'd weep.

A mechanic acquaintance of mine left the nuts loose on one wheel of the local school minibus. Luckily the error was discovered before the wheel came off and no children were in the vehicle at the time. When my friend found out what he'd done he resigned the spot and never worked in the trade again.
