Nissan Quashqui door handle repair for £18.95 against £130 for a Nissan part which then has to be painted. Astra door mirror shell for £20 develpoed on a three D printer.

Wish he had a repair for my A 4 Air con compressor !

Astra door mirror casings must be seriously expensive, both vanished from the car belonging to the daughter of my late next door neighbour, she never did replace them.

This had got to be a winner of an idea, there was a time you could buy lots of individual parts, which gradually changed and you had to buy increasingly more of the car you don't need to get the often cheap item which breaks.

Based in Ramsgate he exports all over the world. But the solution and resulting part takes months to develop.

Got the idea at Uni when his girlfriend was opening her boot with a pencil. The new lock was £150 so he took it to bits and made a part out of steel instead of plastic which has lasted for ever.

It is a good idea but wont it come under copyright which he could be sued for, maybe those that had the idea were stopped doing it for that reason as its strange these components gradually disappeared ? which would account for the reason you had to buy whole units instead of parts...

I think it is a crying shame that we need to buy whole replacement units rather than fix individual components. It is expensive and certainly not "green".

That said, the stock holding of the millions of parts required would be prohibitive and the time taken to strip things like wing mirrors down to fix a fault sub component at a glass palace dealership would probably cost more than the original part.

There is a trend for some repairers though, ABS units can be re-built on a PX basis and DPF can be cleaned.

One company I visit repairs very high spec and very expensive surface mounted circuit boards by hand so it is possible and they had some of the biggest magnifying glasses and microscopes that I've seen.

There are a lot of "patent" parts on the market and these don't seem to be problematic.

Corsa body parts are the same, Vx charges an arm and a leg for replacement plastics and panels so the backwards-baseball-cap brigade nick the parts instead.

Car companies don't make much money selling cars - it is very competitive.

So they seriously mark up spare parts to balance the books. They know that once you own the vehicle you have little choice but to buy spares from them (pattern parts excepted - brake pads, clutch etc).

And whilst I may get annoyed that I have to buy a omplete sub-assembly to make a repair, most people these days simply hand the car over to the dealer/independent and say "fix it".

It is then a balance of labour cost vs parts price - but it is worth noting that designs are optimised to reduce costs and often require specialist jigs etc to make a repair feasible.

My recent experience has been better, especially for my Skoda Octavia .All the separate components for a complex powered door mirror were available and fitted by my local garage. Modestly price as well.

However the latest Octavia has the front grille (easily damaged by minor animal collisions) bonded to the front bumper panel and is not an easily replaceable part.

3D printing of components is available, but is a complex process.

Makes so much sense. Often fixing in built design flaws and saving the environment at the same time. Why throw away a whole assembly when you can fix the existing ones? In the case of the Nissan door handle its a fix in situe and no need to spray the new latch.
Sold through Amazon and EBay.

I have no connection with the company but I am totally inspired by the idea !

Quite specialist and limited in its component list. The prices for similar components on line are cheaper/more expensive depending how you search. But good luck to them.

Another example is the Ford Galaxy handbrake fix which costs £35 and takes 30 minutes to fit against a whole day at the Main Dealer.
And the improvement on the eBay fix for a C4 glovebox using a bath plug which XBR believes is a bit of an improvement.
May be interested in the EGR blanking kit at some stage too.
