What is reasonable for a modern brake pad?
i.e is 12500 miles reasonable? with discs changed every other time (i.e every 25000miles)

I would be shocked if my pads lasted less than 50k miles. This is totally dependent on how you drive.
|
Depends on size of car, weight normally carried, auto or manual, and obviously driving style.
I tend to get around 25 - 30k out of mine and I'm quite heavy on the brakes, my car's auto, and I carry a lot of tools etc.

Scenic lasted 36,000 miles, seems about my average on cars, except an auto cavalier that did 20,000 miles. Exception was a 79 fiat 131. The pads did not last from one 6,0000 mile service to another hence it was always chewing brake disks.

My Escort TD(hard driven) discs and pads are still OK at 41,000.

My wife's 1990 Corolla is still on the original front discs and pads at 109,500 miles. We purchased the car at 12,000 miles, nine and a half years ago. The original battery lasted nearly tens years. I find it had to believe as well.

A Renault 10 I used to own back in the 70's used to go through a full set of pads (disc brakes all round) every 6,000 miles, compare that to my previous car, a Ford mondeo, which had done 40,000 miles and the pads were only half worn down when I passed it on.

55K on my Passat's front pads and 65K on rear but with 50%+ of my miles on motorways I'd expect about this.

Volvo Torslanda disks 280,000 miles so far, pads last about 50,000 miles. But then I brake gently.

The Mintexs on my 820 Vitesse Sport when I bought it lasted 35k, even with slotted rotors. The EBC Green Stuffs I replaced them with are now about half worn and look like they will last about the same, maybe slightly less.
The previous owner replaced the standard front discs with slotted rotors after cooking the originals in the Alps. They did 50k before I cooked them on the local bypass - there was plenty of metal, I just abused them terribly. I hope the EBC Turbo Grooves I've just put on will last a similar mileage.
IMO - 12k is way too low. Something wrong or you're very hard on them.

The nearside brake caliper on my old 309 has been binding. So over the last 10,000 miles the nearside pads have worn about 80%. But the offside pads have only worn 30% (i.e. they would have been good for over 30,000 miles - still poor but acceptable). Halfords pads.
Sounds like PeteH may have a similar problem.
