Hi all, first post, hoping can find some good advice.

Have run a 106 1.5 for 10 years and has run perfectly for all that time ... good MPG, starts in under a second, hot or cold weather, zero smoke and always passes emissions.

But the last couple of weeks, it has started hunting and revs vary up and down. Changed the glow plugs for Beru ones (never been done during those 10 years & 75k) and has improved matters but it has cut out twice in exactly the same place two mornings running ... does 3 miles, stands for 2 mins running when drop the wife off at work, turn the corner and cuts out! ... in exactly the same place to the meter, I kid you not.

I squeezed the duel primer bulb which was soft and after three squeezes it goes hard and then starts first time. Thinking an air leak maybe?

Engine has always had synthetic oil, serviced on the dot and prior to this has been perfect. Oh we had a professionally reconditioned diesel pump when we first bought it so not that. I think there is a fuel pump in the tank from what I have read but don't know much about that, has never been done while we have had it. But can see bubbles on the clear pipe coming out of the diesel pump. Engine has done 230k but really has run a dream until now.

Would appreciate any advice or direction on likely source of problem. Can't see any obvious leaks but the fact that the primer bulb solves the problem causes me to wander about that.

Many thanks in advance

If its got a primer bulb ,then I doubt it has an in-tank lift pump. I think air leak into the fuel system is a good shout. Check all pipework and joints ,especially around the fuel filter.

And when was the last time the fuel filter was replaced?

You say that you can see air bubbles coming out of the pump return, so seems that air is getting in somewhere.

Fit a piece of clear tubing immediately before the pump on the supply side & check for air there.

If nothing shows up it might be a leaking seal on the pump itself.

Above air leak suggestion sounds best bet, but, just in case iit MIGHT somehow be relevant, I'll mention that I've had similar behaviour with a motorcycle, and it turned out to be a clogged breather in the petrol cap leading to negative pressure in the tank, which caused fuel starvation.

Obviously VERY different sertup. Gravity feed, and no excess fuel return line, but 4WIW

Hi there and thanks for helping out. We pretty good on service items, we do the lot of filters and oils etc every year so hopefully not that. That said it is service time and have the kit ready to do so will 100% do that to eliminate the possibility. Is every good reason to do that and a good shout for sure.

Thanks and will post back findings

Ahh did not know that, I was searching on ebay for spares and saw that refered to for that model so a bit of speculation on my part. I've never seen or worked on that component.

Thanks for the steer, have not yet looked but certainly will do early morning on the air leak side and post back. Cheers

I had the same issue on a 307. I put PTFE tape on all the plastic fuel pipe connectors.

After that the priming bulb went firm and stayed firm, and the issue was resolved.

Morning all and many thanks for the quality information .... it was indeed an air leak causing the problem.

Mind you, was surprised to find it was the fuel filter and connections either side. Originally thought it was the primer bulb as the assembly was loose but upon looking, there was a fuel leak form the filter area. Apparently is very common.

Have to confess did not look at that and just assumed would be good as we did the service a year back. lesson for me!!!

But thanks to all for the excellent data ... know a look more than I did now.

Cheers

You can get a new primer bulb on Ebay all cars for under £3.I would replace anyway because of age.
