I see that Luton Airport are putting their minimum drop off charge up to £4. £3 was enough - it just seems they, like many other places, see motorists as an easy cash cow! I can remember when it was free!

I think they are trying to persuade people to think of other ways to get there, without putting more pressure on parking/drop-off space. Some wallets hurt eventually.

There are many previous posts (including mine) on parking charges and access at this airfield.

This latest rise will guarantee that I will do everything possible to either always use Stansted, an airport built as an airport( it has its faults but it is much better) or of course Heathrow-preferably Terminal 5.

The argument that "Luton is my nearest local airport"--absolutely no longer applies if travelling there, gaining access by car, bus or on foot is so unpleasant. Plus of course you then need to tackle the bedlam of check-in, security, a departure lounge with minimum seating and boarding gates areas like 1950's bus stations.

I'm not a fan of airports generally, but I don't find Luton better or worse than others.

It is our nearest and we make it work for us. I agree the drop-off/pick-up point is not very satisfactory, but car drivers create a lot of the problems by stopping at the wrong places, thereby obstructing others. Apparently the location is temporary and will move underground at some point.

When the new rail link from Luton Airport Station to the terminal opens things should improve considerably.

Security is no different from other airports in my view and the last couple of times we've been through it's taken around twelve minutes The departure lounge is certainly no worse than Gatwick's when I've been there.

Yes-the rail link will help. Its scheduled to be operational in 2021 ( play the violins!)and will greatly assist rail passengers arriving at Luton Airport Parkway.

Just wonder what the drop off charge will be for those wishing to utilise the rail link at the railway station? This will have to be a very organised user friendly arrival centre/drop off - especially since the airport authorities are bound to block off all traffic still wanting to go "up the hill" the old way to the terminal.

My guess, for what it's worth, is that traffic will still be allowed "up the hill" to a drop-off point near the terminal (on the basis that there will always be people running late who want to get dropped off there), but that the charges "up the hill" will be higher than at the bottom. If traffic up the hill is reduced because of the rail link it should be quicker than it is now to drop off there and it's a chance for some revenue (think premium tariff) that Luton Borough Council (who run the airport) might not want to miss.

"Luton Airport are putting their minimum drop off charge up to £4."

That doesn't tell the whole story. The new charge is for 13 minutes (minimum). The previous charge was £3 for 10 minutes mimimum. As before, each minute or part of a minute over the minimum is charged at £1.

So in some circumstances it could work out cheaper. For example, 13 minutes under the old system would have been £3 for 10 minutes plus £3 for the extra time - total £6. Under the new system it's just £4.
